I\'ve just saw the Linux PS2 package from this site and all I have to say is I\'m impressed.  Many people out there are now dreaming of using their PS2s to run PC games.  However, how much RAM does the PS2 have? 16MB? maybe 32MB(tell me anyways ;))? Not even Diablo 1 would run with such limited system memory.  Even if it was to have let\'s say 128MB of sys. memory as a future upgrade, it really would be nothing compared to even a cheap ol\' Celeron machine.  My brother\'s friend has a PS2(I don\'t), and all I have to say is I\'m not impressed.  Framerates are VERY low, and visual quality is all blurred out.  Also, its not to do with the limited screen resolution of TVs or anything.  The Dreamcast ran all games with visual clarity.

Now, what do you think about what I just typed other then I\'m a major jer_ or idiot(just revise what I typed and tell me what you think)? :D
Honestly speaking, how can the PS2 run PC titles at all with its limiting RAM? Also, does PS2 support 32bpp at all?

Thanks!

I for one see no reason to use the PS2 for computer games.  PS2 games wouold be much better on it because they are designed specifically for the PS2.  Computer games have no such considerations, and therefore should not be compared to PC games on an actual PC.

And welcome to the forum, nice first post!

The PC and the PlayStation 2 are completely different. What on earth are you talking about. Let\'s compare Megahertz, althought that also doesn\'t matter or work in any way when comparing two completely different things...;)

But really, what is limiting PS2\'s performance? Counting on spec, its near to perfect.  However, games I see run at a constant 25fps OR lower. :(

Chaps, what ps2 games did you tried?  have you tried out Gran Turismo 3 yet?  the graphic will blow you away at a constant 60 frames per second!:D

PS2 is dedicated mainly for games so it required less Megahertz while PC is a multipurpose machine,   so it required more hertz, more RAM to reduce time and stuff.
Some benchmark test took 2 years ago,
the ps2 was 300MHZ but it outperform twice the speed clock of a Pentium III 733 MHZ (or 1.466 MHZ) in term of GFLOPS (Giga floating points per second), polygon pushing, etc.
But for spreadsheet and doing window 98 thing, it was slower than a Pentium II 200MHZ...

It just that the artitecture of ps2 is "different" than any current console, the limited 4 MB of RAM was actually for streaming texture and storage.  Developers aren\'t familiar with ps2 system, and there aren\'t any tools out there that push ps2 to the limit yet, give ps2 some years and you will be amazed by it graphic.
playstation 2 rules.  Nintendo Starcube Dolphin drools.  Hehehahahheheheh...

Chaps

You\'re completely confused here

The Linux kit has nothing to do with running PC games. its  PS2 development kit for home coders to make their own PS2 games

Never will PC games be able to be played on a PS2 without being fully ported into PS2 code.

Also the PS2 has 32mb of main memory and 4mb of  Vram

it also has some cache memory on the EE

what the heck are you talking about chaps?? Every game i\'ve played has run at a constant 60 fps, with clear, sharp graphics.  I\'m sure some games may dip below 30 fps, but don\'t make it out to seem that all the games are that way.  Only the ones made by developers who try to code the ps2 like a pc have games like that...

I\'d love to know which games you played. Ten out of the eleven games I own run @ 60fps. --

I guess he played some of the 3DO games. The only 3 games I have that run at 30fps are Red Faction,SSX and Smugglers Run.
2 of them are launch titles.

Well, he could have played any of these for bland graphics or slowdown....or on some cases bothe mixed together!

Oni (low graphics quality and slowdown)
SSX (slowdown)
Red Fatcion (some slowdown)
Starfighter (slowdown)
Unreal Tornament (jerky multiplayer and bad graphics)

There are more but I can\'t think of them right now.

But playing ZOE and the MGS2 demo takes away all my fears for the PS2. GT3 didn\'t impress me as much as these two (don\'t bash that-it\'s my opinion!!)
