Japanese PS2 with American PS2 Multitap
« on: August 04, 2001, 09:26:41 PM »
Hi, does anyone know if there are compatibility issues with a Japanese PS2 and a US multitap?
I have a Japanese PS2 (model SCPH-10000) and I bought a multitap here in the US but I can\'t get it to work.  The games recognize that the multitap is plugged in (i.e. the multiplayer modes become selectable) but the controllers don\'t resond.  They have power (the analog light comes on) but none of the buttons do anything.
Do I have to try and get a Japanese multitap?

Thanks for any response.

I have no idea...but I just wanted to to welcome to the forum anyway...;) I\'d think they\'d be compatible...sometimes my US multi-tap doesn\'t work with my US PS2...maybe it\'s just being stubborn...

Hmmmmmmmmmmm...beats me on what the problem is. At most, you have to get a Japanese PS2 multitap2. However, since it recognizes the multitap 2 (your talking about the multitap 2 right?) then it might not be compatibility problems. But I not sure (since I don\'t have to worry about that since I have a US PS2 and US multitap 2). Now, the other thing I can think of...are all the controllers PS2 controllers, or PSone controllers? I ask this since, I know for a fact, some PS2 games are content with PSone controllers, while others (like the Bouncer) requires you to use PS2 controllers. Duel Shock 2.
Opinions are not important.

Welcome to the forums.

I heard that most hardware was compatable but the multitap unfortunatly isn\'t in the list. Anotherwords its not supprising it doesn\'t work.

I wouldn\'t put money on that statement though as I can\'t remember where I heard it from. Read it somewhere though.

EDIT - Come to think of it, that could have been PS1 multitaps on PS2s.

Well, thanks for the input so far.  I will explain the situation more deeply.

I bought my PS2 when I was in Japan last year in June, so I have the very first model (that right there could be the issue as I understand that the SCPH-10000 has several problems).  Nevertheless, I haven\'t had any problems with it until I tried using a multitap.

I am using the PS2 multitap not the PSX.  I have tried with all PS2 Dualshock controllers, all PSX controllers, and a combination of both.  I have also tried two different PS2 multitaps thinking perhaps that one was bad.

I am trying to use the multitap with the following games:  Street Fighter EX3 & Tekken Tag Tournament (both original Japanese version).  In both cases, when I plug the multitap into the console, the multiplayer option (for more than two players) becomes enabled whereas before it wasn\'t.  However, none of the controllers does anything.  (i.e. Pushing the buttons or the direction pads gets no response from the console.)

I have tried plugging everything in before even giving the console power, plugging it all in after the game has booted, etc.  But nothing seems to make a difference.

Basically I was wondering if anyone had heard anything like this happening before.  I don\'t see why this should be happening, I mean usually peripherals are peripherals and regions don\'t matter.  Two of my PS2 controllers are also from Japan but the others were bought here in the US and I don\'t have any problems with them.

Anyway, I think that just about fully describes the situation.  If anyone knows anything that can help then I thank you in advance.

They won\'t support a Japanese PS2 in the US with a US multitap. So calling them would do no good.
