Carmack On Doom 3 For XBOX, PS2, and Gamecube
« on: August 10, 2001, 01:48:48 PM »
Got this from gaming age.

Iwas at quakecon today and I went to the ID press conference.

On PS2 "It isn\'t powerful enough to handle Doom 3 in its current form and we aren\'t currently planning a version for the PS2/ If a PS2 version is announced, it will be done by an outside developer."

On XBOX "This system can hit our sweet spot for graphics and it can do Doom 3 without any graphical changes, however the levels might need to be segmented since there isn\'t enough ram to put a whole level in"

On Gamecube "We know nothing about this system and Nintendo has shown us nothing"

Hmmmmmmm........interesting xbox is the only system that can handle it and gamecube they know nothing about?:thepimp:

iD can take DOOM and shove it where the sun don\'t shine. Mr. Carmack *cough* mentioned that his target framerate on a GeForce 3 was 30fps. On a GeForce 3! So I can only imagine those of us with inferior videocards... we\'ll be running Doom @ 10-15fps. Yup, great for sales.

( -- this is in relation to the PC version of course.)

It has to be segmented because there\'s not enough memory? You know...this game is going to blow. I don\'t think they know how to program for the consoles the way they need to be programmed for. I would like to see what it look like right now...the "current form". It must look incredible...:sconf:

Carmack is a very talented developer. Which means he is also very intelligent. Sadly, along with that intelligence and talent comes arrogance. I won\'t dispute what he said about the various consoles, because I don\'t work at ID. I wouldn\'t know. However, comments he has made in the press time after time shows his arrogance and \'my way or no way\' attitude.

On another note,

What would you expect Mr. PC to say regarding the X-box and PS2? He\'s always been anti-console.

^^^Always.

I believe it was said a while ago that id was supporting the Xbox so why would he hype up the PS2 and Gamecube?

Of course he would say that.  He grew up programming on computers.  Why would he waste his time learning a whole new way of programming by making Doom 3 for the PS2?  I respect this guy a lot because he is almost exactly the kind of guy I want to be.  He started as a bedroom programmer, then hit it big with Commander Keen (I think).

And about splitting the levels up -- what is this guy doing?!  I thought he was smarter than that.  Instead of learning a way to fix the problem, he is just going to take the easy way out.

John Carmack is propably one of the most talented programmers out there, sadly he is also one of the most closed minded,he likes x86 and only x86.Since the X-Box is a x86 based console it makes since for him to like it.

A while back he talked about AltiVec implementation in the Mac version of Q3A, he said it was too difficult (when it is known that AltiVec implementation is easier than implementing SSE instructions) and not worth it, some other guy at iD who had more experience with PPC code managed to get it working in a week and it payed off.

I don\'t really trust his word when it comes to consoles, when he\'s talking about PC\'s I belive him.
