Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within....why did it flop...

i dont know if its been done before or not...so...anyhoo...

why do you think FF:TSW flopped?  It had a lot of hype, a lot of people talking, and something people had never seen before, and wanted to see.  Reviews werent sparkling, but they werent bad.  So why did it flop.  I believe the name.

Lets face it...the movie is NOT a final fantasy.  Its a movie, made by Square, with the name Final Fantasy tacked on, for instant recognition, and a guaranteed success...or so they thought

By naming it Final Fantasy they have pretty much eliminated the majority of film goers.  They can easily label it as another game - movie conversion that they shouldnt waste their time seeing.  Effectively, by naming it Final Fantasy they lost any chance of non-videogaming fans from seeing it.  It doesnt have the big breasts and the traditional action that exists in Tomb Raider...

So many people who would have wanted to see it (posssibly soley because of the computer generated visual feast that it is) have been saying things like "Well, i suppose you\'d like it if you were a fan of the game" unknowing that it is not based on any of the games, nor is it even like any of the games.  Without a learned friend to tell them otherwise, they wont waste their time seeing it, instead, going and watching something else.

well...damn, i gotta run, and didnt get to finish my post...tell me what you guys think, and if you have any other thoguhts on FF flopping

oh, and an original script would have helped too (watch Aliens & Starship Troopers (HUGE Aliens rip off ) and other sci-fi action movies, and you\'ll see some resemblence)

Right you are Bob, they should have given the movie its own name.  What does the movie have to do with the game?  Obviously this was a mismanaged project.

I think it had something to do with the fact that animated movies normally don\'t do tremendously well in theaters.. and it was a SCI-FI movie. Shrek was advertised as a movie with big name voices.. Final Fantasy was not.

However

1.) Final Fantasy will do great in japan when its released there shortly
2.) DVD sales will be decent, which is why it will be on DVD in OCT. People see this as a showcase title, the curious people will wanna see whats going on.. you should be surprised at the DVD sales
3.) Alot of the budget went towards the building of a new studio. The next movie will be much cheaper to produce. Even if the movie did not do well, think of it as a Giant portfolio.. Square has proven they can animate well.

James Woods is a pretty big name.  And so is Alec Baldwin.  Steve Buscemi is so-so.

While you\'re right Rob, they are big names,  you don\'t see the point, what Chrono was meaning is that they didn\'t hype the names up as shrek did, i remember they said the actors names on the commercials.

• The story was terrible.
• For the most part animated sci-fi flicks don\'t do well. Titan A.E being an example.
• The actors who done the voice-acting was not really hyped. If they would of hyped that more, it would of easily drew at least alittle more.

It was a failure, just like I figured. Still, I have talked to people who hated the movie and still plan on buying the DVD. Why? Because it was eyecandy. I don\'t quite understand it, but hey, that alone goes to show that the DVD sells stand a chance.

Titan AE has had awsome DVD sales,
I expect FF to do the same...

I remember going to see Star Wars: TPM and seeing the preivews of Titan AE, I was in awe.......But then it went to an animation design, it turned out pretty good though (Planet Bob;)) Also there were so many more movies out that were better than it at the time.

Well, it still hasn\'t hit the finnish theaters - but it will, 24th of this month. And I will go and see it - instantly - with many of my friends.

I don\'t mind what critics say, I don\'t mind if it flopped in America, I\'ll go and probably enjoy the movie and probably buy it out on DVD when the DVD comes out

i think it\'s very WRONG to consider it a FLOP just because it Done "baddly" in the US, it dose not mean that it will bethe Same in the rest of the world.

After all Didn\'t you yanks love Pearl Harbour even though it was the WORST FILM ever COMMITED to FILM

And boy did that film "BOMB" it in Europe and Japan .

You know what?  I\'m glad they didn\'t.  An animated movie shouldn\'t be about who\'s doing the voice acting.  It should be about the story.  That\'s like saying "come eat at Burger King b/c we have pokemon."  The movie should stand on its own.

Well if you bring a movie over too america the highest market in the world and it only makes a measly 27million dollars out of 120million which it took to make. And america is the biggest movie market in the world. And it does not matter what a movie does anywhere else.

I think they should have did a real FF Movie with real characters and special effects. That would have rocked

well i think it just needed more hype

i mean if you think about it no one besides gamers knew what was going on with the movie

also the animation of the characters was too lame when it came to the voices - IOW the facial expressions were lacking making the acting so to speak less enjoyable

also people recongnize those actors for their work but most dont know what their names are just what they look like so when they see a character in a movie and dont see the actor some people dont put two and two together - well i am saying they should have hyped the voice actors

I still wanna see it though.............
