Legendary Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai stepped up and issued a broadside of figures that show just how steep the mountain is that Microsoft faces over the coming years.

Hirai claimed that PlayStation 2 has a worldwide install-base of 14.95 million machines.

5.15 in America, 5.94 million in Japan and 3.86 million in Europe.

Japanese numbers aren\'t really surprising since we have had chance to see Square\'s estimate of PS2 sales numbers(5.5 million) before the launch of FFX.
US numbers almost match US end of June shipped numbers, but that\'s hardly surprising either considering GT3 is the fastest selling game there and quite a few people have bought a PS2-GT3 bundle.
European numbers are bloody good considering the ludicrous PS2 price here(400+ US dollars).
Now let\'s compare these numbers with the original PSX sales numbers.
In US, it took PSX one whole year to reach 1 million. PS2 has already a 5 million + userbase there and it isn\'t even one year old yet.
The same goes for Europe. It took PSX one year to reach a million users in Europe. More than 3 months before its birthday here, PS2 has already reached 3.86 million.
The situation is slightly different in Japan. It took PSX one and a half year to reach 2 million users(According to my old GamePro). In the same time frame, PS2 has already reached 6 million gamers.
I think that this, more than anything, signals that the gaming is enjoying an unprecedented growth and that this bodes well for the upcoming GameCube and XBox launches.
Now there were a few more interesting things in the article
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/story.cfm?sid=3217Hmmmmmmmm...........nintendo and M$ will not catch up to this number guys. I mean 15 million in alittle over a year is unheard of. Its going to take a miracle for M$ and Nintendo to pass this number.
