Thanks to excellent software, especially the release of Final Fantasy X, sales of PS2 are hopping.

August 17, 2001

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said today that sales of PlayStation 2 units in Japan have reached high spikes of 150,000 in early July.

Though units were short in supply here in North America during last year\'s Christmas period and during the following four months, the system was readily available in Japan during the same time. But with better games coming out, such as Final Fantasy X, system sales have been hopping to the tune of 100,000 units a week. Released on July 19, Final Fantasy X has been a huge help in the rise of sales.

Still, part of Sony\'s problem has been production dilemmas, which it\'s been trying to address. By June\'s end 2001, SCE has shipped 5.94 million units in Japan, with a total of 14.95 million units worldwide. Sony has said publicly that it plans to have shipped (not sold through) about 30 million units by spring 2002.

Reminds me off Final Fantasy 7 and hte Playstation. . . exsept then it had competition. . .

I don\'t realyl beleive in a consoule war, but like you siad come Christmas thier are going to be so many games that will do what Final Fantasy did. Thier line up is going to be what? 4 5 or 6 times as big as X-Box\'s and GameCube by then?

But people would rather buy something "new" than a 1 year old console with lots of great games on it.  Just look at the PSX vs N64.  There were a lot of great PSX games, but the N64 had 1 great launch game (Mario 64) and it was "new", so people flocked to it.  They eventually came back to the PSX when they realized the N64 wasn\'t all it was cracked up to be.

I\'m not saying this is what will happen this time though.  People will definately flock to the NGC and Xbox, but they might not come back to the PS2.  The NGC and Xbox will have a lot of great games and will be 1 year newer, which will make it very hard for Sony to compete this Christmas IMO.

I definently agree..... I think I will be running off to Xbox, sad but true, because of the great 3rd party support and beautiful hardware. Also the games coming out look better then MGS2! I can\'t wait to hold one! I mean come on...... Xbox has multitap, HD, modem that all comes with it all at a reasonable price of $299...... Very affordable here! For me that is.....:D

I can\'t just go run off to the Xbox not knowing if it will live up to the hype.  The NGC is also getting some great games, and I can\'t deside which console I want more.  I think I\'ll wait for a while having fun with my PS2, then in like a year I will know which console to get -- if any.
