The Mac only get\'s a speed advantige when they enable the AltiVec unit (think PS.2 vectir units) in the program in use.And the x86 code is old and kinda outdated, Apple\'s PPC code is better fewer and less complex instructions.
The P4 and the Athlon will beat the G4 in most applications, but programs like Photoshop will continue to be better on the Mac since it\'s highly optimized for that platform
The G4 is getting too old to be a real competitor, Motorola hasn\'t really been working on them for about 2 years, the only things they did were to change the pipeline from the basic 4 stages to 7 stages to increase clockspeed.
And there has been alot of talk about Motorola closing it\'s semiconductor division, which put\'s Apple in a bad place, the only alternitive for Apple for designing and making processors is IBM (that is, if they want to do it) but Motorola won\'t license it\'s AltiVec technoligy to IBM,and Apple has designed all their programs and OS X around AltiVec.
