Stop with the inappropriate smilies, please...

OK now...the top of the line Pentium 4 isn\'t as fast as the top of the line Mac G4. In fact, the Mac G4 is about 80% faster and comes standard with a 64MB NVidia 3 card...:D But enough of that.

They don\'t call 1000MHz Megahertz. They call it a gigahertz.

1000 Megahertz = 1 Gigahertz
1000 Gigahertz = 1Terahertz

And so on. I would have listed more, but I have no idea what comes after that...:shy:

Don\'t worry I stopped.... And also, I can\'t imagine how fast 1 Terahertz would be like! It would like be the ultimate PC!:D

:(Man I wish I had a time machine.:(
.... take the skin and peel and back...

now doesn\'t it make you feel better?

The Mac only get\'s a speed advantige when they enable the AltiVec unit (think PS.2 vectir units) in the program in use.And the x86 code is old and kinda outdated, Apple\'s PPC code is better fewer and less complex instructions.

The P4 and the Athlon will beat the G4 in most applications, but programs like Photoshop will continue to be better on the Mac since it\'s highly optimized for that platform

The G4 is getting too old to be a real competitor, Motorola hasn\'t really been working on them for about 2 years, the only things they did were to change the pipeline from the basic 4 stages to 7 stages to increase clockspeed.

And there has been alot of talk about Motorola closing it\'s semiconductor division, which put\'s Apple in a bad place, the only alternitive for Apple for designing and making processors is IBM (that is, if they want to do it) but Motorola won\'t license it\'s AltiVec technoligy to IBM,and Apple has designed all their programs and OS X around AltiVec.
I recently discovered that my ass is the key to the universe.....now I must fight to protect my ass from those who might abuse it!!!

Mhz should double every 18 months til about the year 2010...then it will slow down...

but thats based on the fact that we will not discover better chip technology...which we prolly will...

but Mhz isnt the best way of judging how fast your processor is (unless comparing a P4 1Ghz against other P4\'s)

In 2050 you won\'t be seeing the processor types we have now. I\'d guess we\'d use quantum computing, which is by far much faster than the current crop of computers - because it can make billions of calculations in the time a normal computer makes one cycle (or something, I\'m not a big expert on the subject). The problem is that it\'s hard to control. But in some 50 years they\'re bound to have much better technology (if we don\'t kill eachother before that, that is). Perhaps quantum computers is the key to artificial intelligence... dum dum dum .

Nah, it\'s pretty fun to imagine what kind of serious power computers will have in 50 years. It\'ll be quite astounding I\'m sure. :)

I really can\'t see why some of you ppl think my thread is
all that stupid. C\'mon, 2050 - 2060 would be just in reach of
my lifespan, and most of you out there. So, ain\'t it fun to guess
a bit how computers and AI will be at the end of our lives.
Maybe those computers will even help to expand our lives, who
knows (exactly)? ...exactly : Nobody.

Also think about the fact that you\'ll be in your 70\'s or even dead by that time, it\'s not that great. I don\'t liek to think about the future that far ahead. It\'s pointless and we have no idea what\'s in store. Looki how far we\'ve come in the past 50 years now. ;)

Yeah this thread makes as much sense as a Metal Gear/007 combination.......oops

Anyways, Samwise is correct we will probably be using quantum computing or something similar.

BTW, I believe Moores law says processing power doubles every 18 months not 50 years; but even that figure gets smaller everyday.
