Q :How fast are computers in 2051 ? help me plz, tech person!
« on: August 18, 2001, 02:00:45 PM »
I\'m so friggin CURIOUS ! I would really like to know
a good estimation. What I did is ; take a household
pc of, say 1000 Mhz, then take the law of Moore :
50 years makes double processor capacity by factor
25 : so 1000 X 2to factor 25 makes about 35,000,000,000 Mhz ?

A household PC in 2051 at 35 billion Mhz ?
I could be terribly wrong.. plz help me !
Why ?!  Because I saw Terminator today again and I\'d like
to know if computers will be fast enough to make intelligent robots like that by that time. Then I might, just, live to see that before I die ( I\'m 23 now )!
This question burns me up to frustration, someone plz
give me a solid estimate.

You\'re a retard There is no way to tell how fast computers will be then. In 2005-2006, IBM, Toshiba, and Sony will release their chip that runs at 200 GHz. That\'s a big leap in chip performance. There\'s no telling what kind of computers there will be, or if there will even be computers...probably devices that hotsync into your brain...:D I dunno...but this topic is useless.

Also...it\'s not accurate to base performance off Megahertz, since that doesn\'t matter at all to the chip performance.

You want an estimate right?

I would say a CPU from 50 years in the future will be roughly 1000 times more powerful then a top of the line P4 today ...

SonyWeb.com has some of the info on that.

He he... I love that picture!:bounce:

Here\'s some quotes:
Quote
As a company now committed to videogame entertainmnet, Sony is planning long-term and has indeed begun thinking about PS3. In fact, this past March, it came to light that Sony had entered into an agreement with Toshiba and IBM to design an all-new, extremely powerful broadband-saavy processor currently code-named The Cell. The Cell will be used in many consumer electronic appliances, and that does include PS3.

The investment by the three companies will be considerable. In fact, according to SonyWeb\'s own news report, the initial research and development cost on The Cell will reach $400 million USD.

However, this is where the truth and the rumor part ways. The rumor goes on to suggest this means PS3 will be available in a year or two and that, therefore, buying a PS2 is a bad short-term investment. Nothing could be further from the truth, because the news sites and reporters and rumor-mongers who suggest this never went on to read the rest of the press release... or worse, didn\'t care and hoped to intentionally deceive consumers.
And also:
Quote
The Cell is not being developed exclusively for use in PS3. In fact, the companies hope to use it in many diverse applications, such as other consumer electronic devices, high-end computer graphics workstations, and servers. But due at least in part to its design, which makes it uniquely qualified to power broadband-enabled applications, it is expected to be the processing heart of PlayStation 3.
Yepper!:D
