D\'oh! for the car junkies
« on: August 18, 2001, 07:43:56 PM »
I think my car has a governor on it. I cannot go over 114 mph, although my dial says 130. My friend has a Sunfire and he can\'t do over 108, and his dial says higher too.

Is there a way I can get that changed? I know Kirath has the Laptop that he plugs into his car\'s brain, do I have to do that?!!?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Huh?

Well, sometimes, cars can\'t go as fast as the speedometer reads. Sometimes they add a few more miles to make it look more impressive. I can\'t help you on this one. Maybe Nitrous-Oxide boosters...;) (just kidding)

I just want my car to be proper. I want to GO 130 if it says 130, not 114!

You are an absolute IDIOT.

Just because your cars speedometer says 130, that doesnt mean that it CAN go 130, it is just an estimate of top speed.

THere are too many variables that change a cars max speed, such as weight, slope, tires etc.

Heh.  kinda harsh there don\'t you think?

Anyway, why would you want to go 130mph in the first place?  Do you guys go to a local racetrack where they let you test out your vehicles? And what kind of car is it?  If it has anything less than a V6 and it\'s stock then I doubt it\'s a governor prob.

Thermometers can sometimes measure up to 120°F but in most places it will never get that hot outside.  The same goes with odometers and most cars.

ummm #Racer#, you may want to check your stuff before calling me an idiot.

When I am going 114, my RPMs only read about 4000. 6000 is redlining. In simpler terms for YOU, my car should still have 2000 more rpms to go up before being at a max. speed.

I\'m not an idiot, tool.

Racer is a total idiot

Cars come off the assembly line always under performing their actual potential.  It all a part of their having to have a certain average of MPG for all of their cars.

You have to get a Chip to reprogram the computer.  It will change shift points,  fuel ratios, etc...  you will get a lot more performance.  You have to use high octane gas though whenever you rechip your car.

We\'ve done several shows on this.  You get an increase in torque and HP.  Especially at the shift points.

Here\'s one company.

thanks man, I will take a look at that :)

I use Hi-Octane gas anyways, along with Octane Booster for a buck/59 a gallon :)

Makes it about 93 to 95 rated gas.

Thankyou, I love you too.

If he had of stated that he was redlining then it would have been a different.

Dood, don\'t do that, Octane can actually hinder your car more then it can benefit from it.  Too much octane and it will cause the car to knock..  It can\'t handle that much octane...  I would suggest never going over premium gas..  Yes if your car had performance parts and could handle the octane then get it..

Also for the governer they only way to get rid of it would be to reprogram your cars ECU..  The central computer, and on those cars I have no idea how to do it..  I suggest going on to message boards for your car and asking them...

And one more thing, you should not be going that fast, I know Im preaching here, but there should not be conditions outside of a race track that you need to go that fast, I can see if you wanna race, or if you wanna go to the dragstrip, but you should drive cautiously..  Trust me..  This is comming from someone who has lost their License 3 times and no pays out the A$$ for insurance..

Kirath makes a good point about the octane.  I was going to mention it before, but figured you know your car.  I agree also about speeding.  I can\'t tell you how many accidents I shot as a news photographer of people driving crazy and dying way before their time.  It really made you sick to your stomach to think that that could have very easily been you.  Especially since I was speeding my butt off trying to get to the scene.

Here is a little blurb on a show we did last year with Superchips.  Our website has changed quite a bit since then so there really isn\'t much on it, but there is a link to superchips.

I get to call racer an idiot though right?  I mean after all he was the one who used the word in the first place and after all he sometimes fits the description.  hehe

Peace out
