SPACE WORLD 2001: ZELDA CUBE crazy new look? Two different versions? Miyamoto explains himself!

Despite Miyamoto asking press not to take videos of Zelda and Mario, low to medium quality videos of both have already spread from Timbuktu to Teeside online, less than six hours after the end of the conference. This being the network age and all.

What on earth happened to the Zelda Cube we were shown this time last year? The biggest surprise of the show has certainly polarised fans. The Zelda Cube we were shown today is completely different -- a super deformed, super cute cartoon version bearing little resemblance to anyone\'s expectations. More traditional fans have already flooded online message boards with enraged protest, some even going so far as to start petitions demanding the old look Zelda back. Others have welcomed the change as a charming new direction.

But what has the producer, Miyamoto himself, have to say by way of explanation? Nintendo\'s main man explained himself in a more private interview setting after the presentation.

"In the version we showed last year at Space World, we were honestly working on Zelda Cube in the previous, mature style were showed earlier. By the time the E3 show came out, we had already changed direction completely on Zelda design-wise but we kept this a secret at E3, and just showed the same version. So about a year ago we were trying many different experiments with the next Zelda, back when I was working on the GBC version. And I started think about what the ideal age for Link would be. I though hard if I really wanted to pursue a really grown up Link and Zelda. And I just didn\'t like the direction this mature Link, with his earring [laughs], was taking the series. Because Zelda is a fairy tale."

"If a game is a hit, next year you get an enhanced version of pretty much the same game. Maybe the character will be a bit more mature. Look at the movie and animation industry -- same thing. In the end, only the really avid movie goers can these sequels apart. Same for gamers, it\'s an increasingly small number who really appreciate these enhancements. So [Nintendo President] Yamauchi-san is against always pandering to this sort of circle."

"There is such a demand for just enhanced R+D and better technology. Where is the demand for taking fun in a new direction? I really hate this trend. That\'s why I told my staff members to just go out and do whatever they want to try. We experimented for a while, and I feel that in the Zelda video we have shown today this is the true course for the next in the series. Progress is excellent and we are very happy with the result."

"People might have seen the beautiful high polygon modem of Link at E3, and might be looking forward to the sophisticated Link figure in that version. I don\'t want to betray their expectations and feelings. So what I am trying to do is introduce something really unique in the new Zelda, because people have come to expect this from every new Zelda title. I can say that we ready to make this truly unique experience happen in the next chapter of the series."

And given his track record, we don\'t doubt the man one bit.

Link looks gay. The new style looks gay. I don\'t care if it\'s going for a new look that will change the industry, it looks like a five year old\'s game.

I hate Miyamoto. KILL HIM. After he finishes the next Mario KILLL HIM and give back Zelda to the guy who produced Majora\'s Mask.

Ugh. Why does Link look so gay? :(

This is exactly what I was saying earlier.  Link gets older, but his world will stay the same.  Can you imagine a "mature" elf running around fighting a fire beast with a giant mallet?  Come on people.  This is not what you envisioned for the next Zelda.  Thank God there are people like Miyamoto WILLING to take the next big step with their most treasured franchise and still manage to keep it likeable and true to its original form.

Yes, in fact, I can play it. :)

EDIT- Miyamoto is a senile old fool.

I agree with Miyamoto\'s explanation. All of the people complaining about Link\'s new look will eventually get over it AND they will all buy it, so the argument is pretty much moot. Miyamoto seems to be an expert on making games enjoyable for most everyone and I still can\'t wait to get my hands on this new Zelda game.

Nice of him to admit that Nintendo basically LIED at E3 because they knew they had completely changed directions with the game but decided to show the SW 2000 video anyway, lamers.

The gameplay had better be AMAZING, AND I MEAN NO FLAWS WHATSOEVER to get me to buy this game that looks like a parody of itself more than anything.

   The game sucks... Miyamoto said when the first Zelda Cube footage was released (look the pic above) that this was REAL GAMEPLAY IN GAME FOOTAGE... so jejejej, if Zelda looks really this way... Miyamoto has fault.

Has anybody honestly played a Zelda game who\'s gameplay did not rock?(no I do not count the CDi Zelda\'s as real Zelda\'s)  Get over the fact that Zelda has a new look and enjoy the damn game when it comes out.

Miyamoto is full of BS.

Nintendo, from the start, knew they would be catering to the younger crowd.  I believe Miyamoto\'s artistic vision was forged to cater to this demographic and not for his own sake.

I\'m all for originality and agree with Miyamoto, except about the mature part.  Fiction doesn\'t have to be about 5 year-olds.  That\'s why so many of us are eating up Metal Gear Solid.

You want to talk about originality, how many times have we seen a goofy little Link running around?  And honestly, how many of us believe there isn\'t going to be a little princess to rescue?  That\'s just more cliche of the genre and the series as we\'ve come to expect.

Again, I will reiterate, Miyamoto is full of BS.

What is the next Mario game call?  Mario Sunshine.  Nintendo is obviously hampering his artistic vision.  Sega needs to buy him out!

"You want to talk about originality, how many times have we seen a goofy little Link running around? "[/b]

Great point!  Wouldn\'t a mature Link be more original?
