NTFS and FAT32 Question...
« on: September 07, 2001, 10:14:36 PM »
I recently installed win2k and did away with winME...

Question:
The software that states that it does not support NT is really saying it does not support NTFS right?

So I can install win2k with NTFS and install another win2k FAT32
and the software that "does not support NT" will run on the FAT32 partition correct?

I apologize in advance if i make no sense :p

NTFS and FAT32 Question...
« Reply #1 on: September 08, 2001, 12:36:13 AM »
I run win2k with NTFS and haven\'t had any problems with the programs I\'m running, and I have a lot of progs...

I\'m not sure if it is becasue of the file systems some old progs won\'t run under win2k, but it sounds like that could be one of the reasons.

Running two win2k\'s one with NTFS and one with FAT32 sounds like overkill though. And if you know a program that you *must* have that doesn\'t support win2k then try to get the latest version of that prog, maybe they added support for it...

If you find that the application definitely won\'t work in Win2K (because of the file system, registry, or whatever) you could always set up a dual boot configuration on your PC.  Install Win98 or WinME first into a small FAT32 partition, and then when it\'s complete and running correctly, install Win2K into the much larger NTFS partition.  When Win2K installs, it will notice the Win9x boot info on c: and ask you if you want to create a dual boot menu.  I think this is the easiest way.  I\'ve tried boot manager programs but not had much luck with them.

No it means it does not work under NT/2000 architecture under any circumstances.  The program may work, it\'s just not officially supported.

I suggest 2 physical hard drives if you want to do this.  install ME or 98 on the 2nd slave HDDrive.  2000 has builtin capabilities to let you dual boot and choose when you turn on your machine.

windows 2000 is nice, Very nice - win2k will be my OS as long it supports most of the software, but MS will probably stop supporting win9x etc. so they can control everyone\'s pc - *cough* time for linux :p

Did you end up formatting the entire drive to NTFS?

I do DV editing and my 2nd HD is all NTFS.  Great since there\'s no 2 or 4gb file limit.

I\'m glad you enjoy win2k.  Although it\'s a resoruce wh*re, I hope you\'ll love the stability!

Well, after looking again, you may not be able to set a different partition as your destination for the backup... Anyway,

START-
          Accessories-
                            System Tools-
                                                 Backup

But, I imagine you already knew that.  Sorry for misleading you.

well see i like win 2k - i have the pro edition - its so much more stable then win98 sec edit

but it doesnt run games well at all - i have a geforce3 and i tested my computer with 3dmark2001 - i had Win98SecEdit and it got a score of 5000 and then i installed win2k pro and it dropped to 2500 - so it cut my framerates in half - i mean sure they are still nice enough but i am just about gonna reinstall 98 back on it although i cant stand it
