RE cube: Realtime or prerendered?
« on: September 13, 2001, 02:40:05 PM »
There seems to be a considerable amount of confusion regarding the graphics of the RE 1 remake that is set to be released exclusively on the NGC. Although it is undeniable that the graphics are outstanding and posses an artistic merit that I personally had never seen in a videogame, the question of its technical merit is still up for debate.

Many were quick to claim that the graphics were all in realtime 3-d (meaning that the spectacular backgrounds were constructed of actual polygons), because of some translated statements made by a Japanesse newsite. However, upon inspecting the video it should be clear that there is absolutely no evidence to support this claim. I did not notice a single instance of the camara paning, zooming or otherwise giving any indication of being able to change its perspective, except by switching the CG backrgounds.

One should also point out the fact that Onimusha was also said to be rendered all in realtime 3-d when it was announced for PS2. And initial screenshots supported this claim. Later the confusion around the use of the term was cleared and gamers were dissapointed to learn the game was actualy played in a fashion very similar to the Resident Evil Series (sans Code Veronica).

That said, the level of interaction with the prerendered backgrouns and how these react to the diffrent lighting effects seen in the game is unprecedented, not to mention the volumetric fog displayed in the outside areas (most impressive display of this technique ever IMO). So clearly the developers are not slacking.

So what\'s your opinion on the matter?

I will close by saying that if I am wrong, and these graphics are indeed all rendered in realtime 3-d, then the GAMECUBE is not only the most powerful console of this generation, but it has graphically exceeded anything I expected to see for the next two console generations.

I don\'t think all of it is, like the forest scene and a few others is obviously pre-rendered, but everything I saw that mansion looked realtime to me. I stopped the video quite a few times to carefully examine everything so I think I\'m right there.

Either way, the game looks ****ing incredible.

I examined everything also, as well as I could on an mpeg. It\'s a shame it wasn\'t in quicktime format, at least you can run that in slow-mo.

All I wan\'t to know is whether, you noticed any indication of the camera paning, zooming, or otherwise giving any indication that it is able to move in realtime as oppossed to just jumping from scene to scene?

If so, where?

Yeah, the game looks absolutely gorgeous, but I really do think these are pre-rendered backgrounds because the video has no moving of the camera what so ever. And the wonderful lighting could also be done in rendered also, just look at Onimushia 2, and Evil Dead. No matter what I\'m still getting this game.

Of course it looked realtime, thats what great looking pre-rendered backgrounds will do to you. They give you this illustion of a 3d environment, but like you said either way this game does look ****ing incredible. :D

BTW Jumpman, I looked at the Team Xbox forum and the newest member was Jumpwoman, and I thought it was pretty wierd. Heres a link to the page! http://forums.teamxbox.com/

The detail is so immense, that the backgrounds certainly look pre-rendered.

But the detail................

The lighting...................

The zombies.................

every1 thought dmc had prerendered backgrounds after watching the 1st movies/screens.  it\'ll really be impressive if it\'s real-time but I dont really care roo much cuz pre-rendered backgrounds are still cool.

Prerendered Scenes are a must for the Resident Evil series. Because it gives it that "cinematic" look, that survival horror games are just yearning for.
