There seems to be a considerable amount of confusion regarding the graphics of the RE 1 remake that is set to be released exclusively on the NGC. Although it is undeniable that the graphics are outstanding and posses an artistic merit that I personally had never seen in a videogame, the question of its technical merit is still up for debate.
Many were quick to claim that the graphics were all in realtime 3-d (meaning that the spectacular backgrounds were constructed of actual polygons), because of some translated statements made by a Japanesse newsite. However, upon inspecting the video it should be clear that there is absolutely no evidence to support this claim. I did not notice a single instance of the camara paning, zooming or otherwise giving any indication of being able to change its perspective, except by switching the CG backrgounds.
One should also point out the fact that Onimusha was also said to be rendered all in realtime 3-d when it was announced for PS2. And initial screenshots supported this claim. Later the confusion around the use of the term was cleared and gamers were dissapointed to learn the game was actualy played in a fashion very similar to the Resident Evil Series (sans Code Veronica).
That said, the level of interaction with the prerendered backgrouns and how these react to the diffrent lighting effects seen in the game is unprecedented, not to mention the volumetric fog displayed in the outside areas (most impressive display of this technique ever IMO). So clearly the developers are not slacking.
So what\'s your opinion on the matter?
I will close by saying that if I am wrong, and these graphics are indeed all rendered in realtime 3-d, then the GAMECUBE is not only the most powerful console of this generation, but it has graphically exceeded anything I expected to see for the next two console generations.
