A little help please.......
« on: September 19, 2001, 04:15:15 AM »
hello all, good to be on the forum.

I want to get the most out of my PS2, so I\'ve decided to get a high quality cable to connect to my TV, however I don\'t know which cable to buy.

I want to buy a RGB Scart lead as this gives the best performance. Does anyone know if the Official Sony scart lead is the best? If not, which scart lead to you recommend?

Any help will be appreciated.

Peace & b wild!

WELCOME !
You can buy any rgb cable ! If you don´t have a +2.000,- $ TV you will never see a diff. between a 9 $ cable or a 50 $ cable...
rgb ROCKS !!! Get a cable that looks like this... you can take some extra sound/picture out of the cinch plug !

Exactally my point.

I have a £1600 Toshiba TV, so I gather I would be able to see a diff. Is there any specific cable you could recommend me? The Tosh also has component input. Is this better to use than RGB?

Are you from Europe ? (Stupid question... I´ve just seen the "GBP" sign in your reply... :D ) I´m not so sure about the US standart and what to use there... for Europe there is no better than rgb !!! (Actually it´s the best standart for everyone, but it´s not available all over the world...)
The other cable you can use is a S-Video cable, but it´s not as good as rgb... IF you use the rgb cable, you will have a "Green-Screen" while watching DVD ! ...but I think you know that allready... If you don´t want this to happen, than you have to use the Datel DVD Region X (don´t know the right name by now) or just go to your local videogamestore and let them do the rgb-Fix on your PS2 (see http://www.gamefreax.de for more details, they´re in english too) !
So, just buy a rgb cable and DON´T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON AN EXPENSIVE ONE !!! You won´t see a diff. !!! Promise !!! Get a cord for 9-15 $ and be blown away by the enhacement it gives you ! Again: The "Monster-Cables" (60-70$) are for guys who spend their whole time and money for a TV or Soundsystem and don´t know nothing else !!! DON´T WASTE YOUR MONEY !!! If you switch from "normal" string to rgb you will have a 100 % better picture... if you switch from XYZ rgb Cable to Monster rgb Cable you only have a 0,05 % better pic... you can  measure it, but you´ll never SEE it !!!

Thankyou so much The Eye. You\'ve just saved me a lot of money!! I was going to buy the Official RGB Scart which costs £32, but after reading your post, I think I\'ll scrap that!
I did buy a Scart lead for my PS1 that was supposed to be RGB. However, although there was an improvement, it wasn\'t that much better. I get a green screen when I watch DVDs, so I suppose it must be RGB. But when I play SSX for example, the writing after you have raced (about the snowboarder) is a little clearer, but is not any crisper, & certainly not sharp @ all!
This is why I was a little sceptical about getting another fairly cheap lead.

hmmm...
1. 32 GBP for the original PS2 rgb ????!! This IS expensive... Are you sure, that it´s not a special one with a build in Videorecorder ?? :D
2. I´ve used my "old" PSX rgb cable too and I must say, that there IS a diff. between the "normal" 3 Cinchcable and the rgb...
3. If you want to see the diff., just switch your TV from rgb to "normal" and you will see it ! Well, as I said before, the diff. is noticeable, but not THAT much... while "PAUSING" a game, look at the snow and the board to see how sharp the edge is now, than switch back to "normal" cable and you will see, that it looks greasy...
Nevertheless, it´s a better pic with rgb, not mindblowing, just better... and without spending much money ! :D

Edit: Maybe you should try to adjust the sharpness on your TV a bit ?! I´ve done it with good success...

2nd Edit: Maybe you think of the texture by saying that it doesn´t look sharp ??? This is not a problem of the cable, but of the PS2... The first games has to cope with the 4MB Vram limitation... and that causes a "washed out", not so crisp texture... nowadays there are ways around this limitation !

I think I\'ll ask for a demonstration of the different leads they have @ my local store before I make up my mind.
Not that I don\'t trust you The Eye! ;) It\'s simply that I want to see the difference between the leads with my own eyes. They also have the monster cables & I want to see, if they aren\'t that much better, how they expect us to pay a lot more money for them.

It´s simple... they ARE better... but only in quality of the material they use ! Gold plugs and superisolated cabels etc. (you can use them beside a power cable without irritation of the picture)...
So, if you can try them on the same TV with the same picture, it´s OK... BUT if they let you see the one cable on a 10 Pound TV and the other on a 2000 Pound one, then you can´t decide properly !
I´ll bet, that you won´t see a diff. at home !!! NEVER !
But you can search for a DVD Site on the web, they have good test of all sorts of cables... if you don´t trust me... pffff... :p ;)
