Part III: The Saga Begins

"Good Luck, Snake."

Luck is a term used frequently in his line of work.  However, luck has nothing to do with just about everything.  Relying on luck to pull anyone out of a tough scrape is probably the worst thing you can do.  Sure, it has aided us from time to time allowing us to be one step ahead of an enemy or a second faster then your competition, but rarely has it ever impacted a mission enough to where Snake hasn\'t had to stick his hands into the mistakes of whole nations and wash the whole situation clean.  Instead, Snake relies on his skills and what he does best.  It\'s what he does best that has made him a living legend.

"Stay alert.  He\'ll be through here, I know it.  I\'m going to go swat down a couple of bothersome flies."

The voice of the enemy.  The actions of a criminal.  The focal point of your mission.

"This is snake.  Colonel can you hear me?"

A phrase uttered twice before over oceans of uncertainty and peril.  However, now is the time to step up against the odds and do as you\'ve been trained just as you have twice before.  It\'s time to be quiet, to be elusive and it\'s time to lurk in the shadows.  The elevator shaft is my only way up; it\'s just a matter of precise timing and swift movements that could mean the difference between life and death.  Thankfully, these soldiers are so new; they won\'t even know I was here.

Then suddenly, his ear twitches and a small infinitesimal beep breaks the silence like a wrecking ball through a glass house, but the sound is only heard by one.  The Colonel briefs Snake on the layout and informs him to head north and into the Shadow Moses facility.  Before the Colonel can even finish his briefing, Snake has already formulated a plan and executed it before the Colonel\'s words even sink into Snake\'s mind.

“A Hind D?  Colonel, what’s a Russian Gunship doing here?”

Two F-16’s from Galena, Alaska are on their way to the island to create a diversion.  Now is the best time for Snake to slip in unnoticed.  There’s eighteen hours to go till the deadline, but there are quite a few surprises left in this journey.  The first is Snake’s Visual and Data Processing specialist, Mei Ling.  She designed Snake’s codec and his Soliton radar system.  She’s honored to speak to a living legend, and Snake’s honored to speak to someone so… Cute.

However, now is not the time for chit-chat, instead, it is time for Snake to do a little reconnaissance.  There are two ways in, a lower vent shaft on the ground floor, and an upper vent shaft on the second floor.  The Second floor vent is patrolled by a moving guard while the ground floor vent is patrolled by a surveillance camera and a stationary guard.  It would be wise to go after the patrolling guard and avoid the surveillance camera.  The guard’s, however, are no slouches either carrying FAMAS rifles and Pineapple grenades.

Quickly, Snake made his way towards his objective on the second floor of the facility.  However, seeing as how trucks in the past always held the most lucrative items for his journeys including rations and grenades, Snake decided to take a peek into the truck stationed there.  Much to his surprise, Snake found a SOCOM USP.

Shortly afterwards, Snake made his way up the stairs, made one guard take a light nap, and headed into the second floor ventilation shaft.  While inside the vent, Snake snuck through and was contacted by Master Miller, Snake’s old drill sergeant.  They discussed the terrain briefly before Snake made his way to the middle of the shaft.  There, he overheard two guards talking about a “woman in the cell” and a new intruder using “stealth” who had already killed three people.  None of this concerned Snake however, and he continued on in his mission.

Snake made his way into the Tank Hangar and quickly explored his surroundings.  North of him was a cargo elevator that could take him to basement level 1 and 2.  Quickly, Snake made his way to sub-level 1 and reached the DARPA chief.  The Chief acknowledged that the terrorists had the ability to launch a nuclear weapon.  However, it is how the Nuke is deployed that sparks Snake’s attention.  The ability is from a dear old friend of his, a project that was supposedly scrapped ages ago, a project known to us all as Metal Gear.

However, there is one fail-safe to the weapon launch.  It’s a card key safety known as the PAL (Permissive Action Link) key.  It’s a set of three keys that disable the nuclear warhead entirely rendering it useless.  The ARMSTECH president, Kenneth Baker, supposedly has the keys.  Shortly afterwards, the DARPA chief spasms and keels over.  His heart has suddenly stopped.  Looking for answers, Snake finds none among his informants and searches for a way out of the cell.

As Snake searches for a moment, he hears a loud thud coming from the room next door.  He stops his search and listens through the wall when the door to the cell suddenly opens.  Snake steps outside and a guard startles him and holds him at gunpoint.  However, this is no ordinary guard; this guard is a rookie, shaking with anticipation and fear.  Snake quickly draws against them and awaits their action.

Before anything can happen, four guards storm the entrance to the cell block forcing Snake and the female guard to go on the offensive and attack the barrage of troops.  Quickly, dodging machine gun fire and pineapples, Snake does away with the majority of the troops until the rookie guard runs off into the elevator.  Snake then has a vision of a masked member of Fox-Hound known as Psycho Mantis.

Being the ever vigilant soldier, Snake ignores the events of before and heads on with his mission down into sub-level 2.  He discovers some oddly painted walls and destroys them with some C4 explosives.  Heading into the bowels of the base, Snake finally finds Kenneth Baker strung up onto a pillar.  Before he can react, he notices C4 rigged to Kenneth’s body.  A chamber clicks and Snake leaps into the air and narrowly escapes a bullet to the body.  Revolver Ocelot finally emerges from the shadows.

Wielding a Colt Single Action Army pistol and claiming that its 6-bullet chamber is enough to kill anything that moves, Snake and Ocelot begin to battle in a game of skill for the life of Kenneth Baker.  However, since Snake has age on his side and a clip of ammunition that can hold up to 12 rounds per clip, Snake forces Ocelot into a corner.

Suddenly from the shadows, a stealthy figure appears and separates Revolver’s pistol hand from his body in a beautiful crimson display.  Milliseconds afterwards, the figure cuts Baker from the pillar as the walls explode around him guaranteeing his safety.  The figure appears from the light wielding a tempered high-carbon spring steel Chokuto Sword and appearing in the form of a Ninja wearing a high-tech exo-skeleton.

“I am like you, I have no name.”

Baker recognizes the exo-skeleton, but not before the Ninja screams and leaps away from the area.  He tells Snake that the Ninja is an experimental Genome soldier, but he doesn’t know anything more then that.  Baker also tells Snake that he gave the PAL key to the female soldier, Meryl, the Colonel’s niece.  Inquiring about the Metal Gear REX project, Snake learns from Baker that the team leader, Hal Emmerich, is present in the Nuclear Warhead Storage facility and is the only person alive who may know of a weakness in the Metal Gear REX architecture.  However, the tests for Metal Gear have already been completed and the information is ready to go back to the Pentagon for a new full scale joint venture.  Baker hands Snake the Optical Disk which contains the data so he can take it back to his superiors.

Before Snake can elicit anymore information about the Metal Gear project from Baker, Baker quickly dies of a sudden heart attack much like that of the DARPA chief.  Before he dies, however, Baker seems to recognize the cause of his sudden illness and says “Oh no, it can’t be!  Those pentagon bastards… So they actually went and did it!  They are just using you for… Ahh!”  Baker then collapsed on the floor.  Now is not the time to brood about the situation, Snake thought, now is the time to find Meryl so they can work together…
