Anyone else have HDTV????
« on: September 30, 2001, 05:16:13 PM »
Man it\'s getting good.
Florida vs. Miss State yesterday.

Alias kicked butt tonight.  I just don\'t know how anyone can watch a regular tv anymore.  You know the ole saying, "Once you go black......."

There is just so much programming now it\'s awesome.  Anyone who buys a regular tv for more than 1000 is a total loser.  HD is getting very affordable now.  Too bad the idiots at Best Buy and Circuit City don\'t want to sell these things.  Every time I go in I inquire about them and the people are total idiots.  They demo them with standard definition stuff all pixelated on them.  Who the hell would buy a fancy new tv that looks like that.

So annoying.

Anyway, you losers with your Wegas, trade them in and get an HD!!!!!

-> The Circuit City where I live has a whole lot of HDTV\'s.  I\'m sorry that yours doesn\'t.

-> I saw an RCA 52" HDTV for $2100, and I thought..."Oh @#!%!!"

-> They\'re getting pretty cheap now.

Damn, I HAVE the TV, but I live in an apartment bldg facing the north side, so I can\'t mount a satellite dish, or antenna or anything.  Everyone always says "you can always watch OTA" but don\'t I need a good antenna for that?  There\'s just no way I can install a reasonable antenna on this building, the landlord would go berzerk.  Unfortunately I can\'t move because this place is SOOOO cheap, it would be a huge waste of money to move right now.  I wish I could get HDTV workin\'  All you people in the fly-over states don\'t realize what property costs in California.  Not all of us live in houses, and it SUCKS.

You don\'t need a good antenna at all.  If you can see a standard analog OTA signal at reasonable strength then you rock.  I was using rabbit ears for a while until I hated looking at them.

I know CC and BB have the tv\'s, but I have NEVER seen them play HD material on them.  Nor have I EVER gotten a sales guy who knows absolutely anything about them.  When I bought my satelite dish I actually had the guy try to talk me out of buying the dish because he insisted it wouldn\'t work.  Then he called his manager over.  I told him that I have a 30,000 CRT projection unit capable of better 1280 progressive.  IT took me forever to buy the dang thing, but let me tell you, it kicks ass.

Now with HDNET, you can go to hd.net, there is a sporting event on just about every night in full HD.

BUY ONE DAMNIT!!!

I\'d like a good TV that\'s not huge.  Do they have HDTVs that come in 27" or so?

The best ones are the tube ones that are all less than 40".  Problem is that these are still pricey.  You can get a 60" rear projection for 3000.  You can get a 35" table top tube tv for about the same price, but man oh man does it look good.  They ahve even smaller ones as well, but it\'s tough to pay 2000 for a 27" tv, until you see the difference.  This is my problem.  You have to go to a high end stereo shop to see the difference because the idiots at BB and CC have no clue.

Personally I wouldn\'t get the rear projection.  The viewing angles are very tight.  To get maximum brightness you have to be sitting directly in front of it.  Front projection is the way to go because it shines on your wall like a movie theater.  All angles are perfect.

RCA is making some tube tvs with some remarkably small footprints.  Apparently they have found a way to bend the beam so that the gun doesn\'t have to sit as far back.

Random acts of consciousness are at it again, sorry.

Working on it...  I have and HDTV \'ready\'  Just not hooked up yet..  I am moving this spring, and when I do I am going to get the Direct TV that has the HDTV capable box and an HDTV recevier for my TV...

So its all comming, but for now I will just watch DvDs..  I don\'t like watching TV enough to get the HDTV all hooked up..  Even though it would be nice to watch two football games side by side in HDTV....  All in due time!!

See, this 16:9   34" is still near $3000

Do not get a 4:3 HD unit though.  All HD content is in 16:9 format.  You will have tremendous burn-in with the wasted black space above and below the image.

You can get the same tv in 4:3 at 2200, but don\'t do it.

Football is incredible.  Only 1 game a week in HD though.  No Pro football!!  The playoffs should be in HD though.  THey were last year along with the superbowl.

I bought the direct tv tuner for 400 bucks.  It also does terrestrial OTA decoding as well.

Now does your direct TV tuner do the HDTV conversion for you or do you have an HDTV tv, or an HDTV with an external HDTV box..??

Cause mine has the plugs in the back for HDTV, but you need to buy and HDTV converter to make it work...

I have a projection unit with RGBHV inputs..  It is essentially a VGA input.

The Direct TV converts whatever comes into it to 1080i.  OTA, Direct TV, whatever....  If you are watching ABC which is 780p, it will automatically convert it to 1080i.  If you are watching standard def TV, it will still make it 1080i.

Fox is 480p.  They suck, but at least they are doing widescreen.  NBC isn\'t doing anything.  They have said though that next year they will have their full slate in HD like ABC and CBS have now.  That is a rumor though.

All you need is the box.  You need to ask a sales guy which direct tv box to get.  The RCA DTC-100 needs an adapter if you want to hook it up to a regular RGB component input.  If you have the 5 inputs like I have it\'s a straight shot, no adapter needed.  That is all I have and it kicks butt!!!!

If any of you want to learn more about it, go to avsforum.com  there are tons of people there.  I frequent the HD Programming forum.  Keeps you alerted as to what shows or networks are popping up in HD.

Thanks Video, this is very useful information.  I do know that I\'m not willing to pay $2000 for a high-defininition 34" TV  :(

Can you tell me more about the 27" WEGAs I see for $550 in the Best Buy ads?  What is the 3-line comb or whatever it is, compared to 1080i?

I really need something better than the 25" Magnavox I got from Wal-Mart for $250.

I hardly ever watch TV, so I\'m not worried about HD programming.  I would really like a better picture when watching DVDs or playing PS2.

Cool, I do have the RGBHV inputs...

Now I just need to find a unit that has outputs with that..

Hmmm, Direct Tv might just have to do it....?
