Profits on the horizon for Sony\'s games division

After suffering through a few quarters of losses, Sony\'s games division is finally starting to turn a profit.

At a press conference on Monday, Sony\'s group CEO Nobuyuki Idei said that the company\'s games unit is expected to return to profitability for the fiscal year ending March 2002. Idei said that the sales of the PSOne and PlayStation 2 consoles are already generating a profit for Sony\'s games division, and a reduction in the price of related components and chips has allowed the company to reduce development costs. Sony expects the reduced price of the European PlayStation 2 console to generate healthy sales this holiday season, despite the general decrease in sales of home electronic and entertainment hardware. The company is holding firm to its forecasts to sell a total of 20 million PlayStation 2 units worldwide by March 2002.


Well this is good news for sony there no longer losing money.

It was unbelievable when they made those announcements BEFORE the US release of PS2. Everyone thought "No way" but they\'re on the mark. Only 6 million units to go.

If all we had to drive were Yugos then Yugos would be selling like hotcakes too...

There\'s a Ferrari and a Mecrcedes coming out next month though.  But like I said before...if it makes you feel better. ;)

What do you mean no competition?  What do you call the Dreamcast, the N64, the original PSX, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, the Game Cube in Japan...do you need more?

I call \'em two dead systems and a couple of handhelds...they don\'t count.  Software-wise those systems aren\'t comparable.  Although the Dreamcast can hold its own against the PS2 graphics-wise, the fact that Sega is making PS2 games and that DC\'s aren\'t in production anymore means DC doesn\'t count.  It\'s not competition.  So I stand by my claim...the PS2 doesn\'t have any competition.   Am I saying that all of a sudden PS2 sales will dry up?  I don\'t know and I\'m not making any guesses.  But the real race hasn\'t started yet so we don\'t how the public will respond to two newer and significantly more powerful game machines.  But yes, Sony is making profit and that\'s good if you work for Sony.

I don\'t remember you ever saying "if it makes you feel better."  Checking...checking...nope.  What the heck are you talking about?

The PS2\'s competition is irrelevant.  Sony made a very smart financial move by launching the machine when they did, and now they are reaping the benefits of it.  They could have easily milked the PSX for another year or two and held off on launching the PS2, but instead, they launched it and sold it in record numbers.  Now the PS2 is miles ahead of the Xbox and NGC sales wise.  The Xbox or NGC could catch up, but think about it logically.  Each console will be competing with two other consoles.  It will be near impossible for any console to catch up to the PS2 now.

I am assuming you haven\'t played ICO if you are comparing a PS2 to a Yugos. (I am assuming a Yugos is bad, but I\'ve actually never even heard of that).  The PS2 is a lot more powerful than you may be willing to accept.  Go play ICO, then come here and talk trash about the PS2 if you still want to.
