The ultimate console war debate!
« on: October 02, 2001, 05:34:05 PM »
First off, I\'d like to thank ajoh432 for telling me about this place. Secondly, I heard about this Jumpman fanboy of Kidtendo(Hehehe!). Now I had a good MSN talk with ajoh about this. I\'ll share with you all. I\'ll go through each of the consoles.

PlayStation2
PS2 has the one year headstart, and the 2 million userbase, I believe. People still want PS2s, and in November it will churn out some great games: ICO, MGS2 I think, and Devil May Cry. PS2 will also get its HD, modems, LCd screen, keyboard, and mouse in November too. So basically, it has a battle-plan.
Thing is that if you want all those accessories, that\'d be about an estimated $500 total put into your PS2 (counting the PS2\'s $300). The price drop also got confirmed as not happenign this year. So other than money, which ins\'t too bad of a deal, PS2 is in good shape. And there\'s also the GC and Xbox hype too, so would\'ve- been buyers of PS2 might forget it and get a GC or Xbox.

GameCube
GC has the cheap price, and the appealingness towards younger kids. If parents are consoel shopping for their kid, even if she/he wants an Xbox, the parent would probably get the GC thinking,"It\'s cheaper, and it\'s still one of the newer ones. Plus, I know Nintendo for makign good material." Nintendo also has its fanatic fans, who\'ll die for them. And i have to admit the Mario games are cool. The GBA connectivity is a good idea too. A GBA owner is considered a possible GC buyer.
The bad is mainly the ****load of delays. The console got pushed to Nov. 18. 3 of it\'s supposedly good games got pushed back: Pikmin to december, Super Smahs Bros to December, and StarFox Adventures to Jan. 2002. Another thing is the purpleness and gay handle, that\'ll keep male adolescents away. Also, Nintendo hasn\'t metnioned crap about online plans, which I bet they don\'t have, or at elast they won\'t work out. GC has almost no advertising, except a magazien ad I saw in EGM with a naked, fat guy, in a cube shaped bath tub. That ad probably KEEPS people away. Then there\'s this weak Cartoon Network sponsorship. Kids are porbably identifying, GC as another name for GBA, since GBA has dozens of commercials on that channel. Also, Nintendo screwed up Zelda. ANd the launch gaes aren\'t appeasing. Luigi\'s Manios is repetitive, WaveRace is a rehash, Madden will be on everythign else, Kobe Bryant Courtside as so far been only a mediocre game on N64. The games peopel want wont; kick in til December, like Pikimn.

Xbox
The good is that it managed to get some good games. It\'ll get most of the good PS2 games, like Silent Hill, MGS, and probably FF11 and a Chrono game form Square accordign to rumors. Also, you get broadband connections and the 10 GB HD right out of the box. MS has lots of money for ads. The last EGM had an ad for just about each game comign for Xbox at launch and followign launch. Even EGM\'s cover was a centerfodl for a Halo ad. Speakign of Halo, xbox is gettign good exclusive material like Cel Damage, Dead or Alive 3, Munch\'s Oddysey, Mad Dash Racing, and Air Froce Delta Storm 2.
The bad is the $300 price tag. Come to think of it, that\'s a good deal. PS2 s $300. Xbox is better than PS2, and it\'s also $300. i can see it now,"Get an Xbox for the mere price of a PS2." I bet they\'ll use that catchphrase. They should at least. Another bad thign is the bundle pakages. Actually, most of the retailers sold out the $500 bundles within 30 minutes. so that turned ot well. Good thing is that some retaierls won;t do the bundle thingy. The ast bad thign is MS\'s street cred with people, adn the controller\'s face buttons are arranged strangley.

That\'s it for now, Honestly, I can;t really predict who\'ll win. Sometimes I say Xbox will. Then I\'m thinking, "No, defintely PS2." Then "maybe GC, but you never know."
But if I think real hard I think it\'ll PS2 or Xbox. But GC might be strong.
PS2 and Xbox will ass-romp the LamePube!

PS2 has a 15 million user base--not 2 mil.  That alone almost ensures that it\'ll be around for year 5.  New games are looking far better than what we\'ve become accustomed to.  This should keep PS2 going strong.  Sale will slow though because of the newer alternatives.

Nintendo will sell it always does.  It is getting more grown up. I think calling it "Kiddie" is old and unfair to a degree.  Zelda and Mario will move consoles.  RE will get some attention too.  Metroid, although a FPS now, will make lots of people look again at the GC.

Xbox is a dark horse right now.  It pushes the best graphics and that is sure to impress Joe Public.  I think the future of the xbox will be more easily predictable by January.  If it\'s hot it could move up, if not, the press will kill it.  It is with MS though and MS does business like no other.  Failure seems unlikely.  MS never fails they just keep trying until they get it right.

The PSX is in 75 million homes right now (the market has grown by anyone\'s best estimates).  Subtract the PS2\'s 15 million and that leaves at least 65 million gamers (I allowed for a moderate 5 million growth).  It\'s hard to tell right now or make any predictions because no one has played GC or xbox (or at least very few).

If I were to guess I\'d say all three consoles will be around at the end of this "war".  The PS2 because of its userbase, brand recognition and 3rd party support.  GC because of it\'s first party support and improved 3rd party.  Xbox because of Gates and $$ and pretty graphics.

I think all 3 will be viable consoles, but I see the ranking breaking down something like this (based on an estimated 80 million total sales):

1. PS2 35 million
2. Xbox 25 million
3. GC 20 million

I think the PS2 will stay ahead for quite a while but towards the end, as its hardware begins to age and fall behind the other two, GC and xbox will close the gap somewhat.

care to enlighten me on what exactly those accesories are since i am sure one you dont need them when you buy a PS2 and i am also just wondering because you cant say that w/o saying the same for the other consoles as well if it applies

umm i highly doubt there are too many parents thinking that - for one they damn well know if they dont get "Timmy" what he wants they will have to hear about for wuite sometime - so i wouldnt use that as an argument really ;)

Another thing is the purpleness and gay handle, that\'ll keep male adolescents away

again thats a pretty lame argument - werent a lot of GBA pink and purple but they sold like hotcakes - i mean come on who cares what it looks like or else i would never buy an xbox because of that "gay" green it has - its what the system has to offer not what color it is

ok for one - people should not base things on rumors - especially since we have no info on any of those games and your supposed annoucement was over a week ago and still no announcement - so looks like the rumor is dead - or not because people will always bring it up because they dont make rumors that deny it was true - since it was just a RUMOR in the first place

Ummm well all i am gonna say is thats ur opinion - sure its newer but better is not the words i would use for a system i havent even seen with my own eyes - i mean i want a Xbox but i am not so sure about it being better - sure it has better graphics but that in no way makes it better if it cant deliver in a whole - so i will sit back and see what it has to offer as i think a lot of people did with the PS2 - Thats one thing also that PS2 has to offer - It may be 300 bucks but its got tons of games to choose from and they carter to the needs of people of all ages - which is a good thing when you have a older kids and younger kids in the same household - parents will look at the console and say hey its a good system and it has a lot of games for both my kids - of course like i said earlier thats if parents were actually that smart or stupid depending how you look at what i said

anyway thats my word - welcome to the forums man

They say PS2, GC and Xbox will sell 150million units alltogether and that PS2 would be over 50% of them..

150/2=75-80 million PS2 they estimate.. Thats by 2005 I think. :D

Personally I dont think any of the consoles will fail as such, but just that the PS2 will have the biggest userbase worldwide.

long live the king ;)

Mario may look like a kid\'s game and sound like a kid\'s game but it is not only for kids.  I enjoy mario games, and I am not a child.

There are almost as many 3rd parties working on GC than PS2 and xbox so that\'s a none issue.  Cartoony graphics do not make it a kiddy console.

Having said that, I wouldn\'t buy a GC for Mario or Zelda, but I do play them at friends\' houses and I have to admit they are almost always fun.

The childish undertones and presentation do not appeal to me, but I will not say that the Mario and Zelda series only apply to kids.

Is this to say that J&D is a kid\'s game?  I think not.

I agree! J&D is such a major diff from those "others." But those "others" are still good to me.

Wow. If the main knock against the NGC is the delay of three or four games then that\'s great(system delay does not count). You just unknowingly said a good comment about "Kidtendo". :D

I think these console wars are going to be more unpredictable than we think it will be.

Anything could happen this time.

After all, who would have believed that the N64 would lose to the unknown Playstation 5 years ago?  Absolutely no one.

BTW,  We now have a Goku and Gohan at these forums.  If I see a Goten, I\'ll... well, I think you get the picture.
It seems as if the people [casual gamers] that we consider to know absolutely nothing are the ones that actually know the most important thing: Name brands don\'t make the console, games do.
