You\'re Nuked! Now what?
« on: October 08, 2001, 11:43:04 AM »
Hi all:)

Not to bring you down and all, but I was thinking about the unthinkable here in the good old USA. One of those freakshows has a little nuke. Scary thought. So I wanted to see how I would fare if it happened in Downtown. WHEW! Looks like If it did happen I would survive.

Here\'s a LINK for you.

Just enter your city and state, and you will see the results.

Just interesting..:nerd: I fall between the 1 and 2.

Well if someone throws a serious nuclear weapon at downtown LA, then I am a goner.  Don\'t even bother looking for my molecules, I\'m at ground zero most of the day during weekdays.

Keep in mind that the three options offered by this website are all 1 megaton+ weapons, which are NOT man portable.  If a terrorist got a hold of the infamous "suitcase" nuke, it would be a lot smaller (on the order of 25 - 75 kilotons?).  Still a serious problem, but I would guess it could only kill 50,000 - 100,000 vs a million or two with a serious fusion weapon.

:) Always look on the bright side of life! :)

I live miles from the SAC - Strategic Air Command\'s top base, uh oh.

I\'m a goner if they could penetrate America, which they won\'t...ever again. :) Never with a real army anyways, terrorists are for the most part unstoppable, they will alwyas find a way, but planes and stuff wouldn\'t get through America\'s arsenal and Canada\'s several small rocks and sticks.

I dunno, I think I would rather be smack dab in the middle then be on the next to outer fringe.  I don\'t want to have nuclear shpoo.

And Core...  You\'re correct. Unfortunately I think it\'s a distinct probability:sleepy:

.....On the upside if they release the Nuclear "genie" it will give us legitimacy to make a huge glass sculpture in the desert:cool:

I dont think a nuke will ever hit the US..not a major one that has to be dropped from a plane..IE.atomic..hydrogen..hiroshima :) SO iguess im not really worried..but like someone else said..the suitcase nukes would be quite a prob in well populated areas.

Hmm.. Pity this doesn\'t take into acount that there is such things as WIND and Mountians.     This is measured by miles/km etc. But this isn\'t including weather and landscape etc. This things can change the distance of the radation.

If a nuke went of in melbourne. The fallout area isn\'t near me. BUT.... if there was wind coming from the west. I\'M DEAD... If the wind comes from the South.. YAY i\'m not touched etc.

I\'m pretty sure if a nuke exploded anywhere, we\'d all be fairly "touched."  Fortunately, we have the nuclear regulatory service which tracks all nuclear material within US boarders.  It\'d be pretty difficult to even smuggle a nuke into the US without anyone knowing about it.  Without proper shielding, the device gives off a halthy amount of radiation that makes the carrier detectable from miles away by radars or special scanning equipment, much more sophisticated then geiger counters, believe me.

However, there are non-nuclear explosives that are powerful enough to level anything within a mile of detonation, unfortunately for Terrorists, the military has been unsuccessful in streamlining this equipment and making them small enough to carry in suitcases.  However, anyone can rent a van at Hertz...

Alright, if Waterloo, Illinois gets nuked, I\'m screwed.

But I really doubt any terrorist in their right mind would do that. After all, my town contains no one intelligent, no important military installations.. actually, this would be the perfect place for a terrorist to harbor themselves.

I am in the 1-2 in Brisbane...

I think that Nukes are a thing of the past. Chem and Germ seem to be taking over, which in effect are more scary...
