has anyone had problems with western digital hard drives?
i have 3  friends whom have lost atleast 2 western digital HD\'s a piece..thats unreal...they say the longest theyve lasted has been 30 days..the average lifetime was less than a week...
i was there when 1 of those 6 HD\'s fried...and i just thought it was coincidence...well i bought a western digital 35 days ago,  and walla,  its f*cked...its been clicking since last night and has slowed down my pc immensly....

anyone experience any similar problems?

Well I\'ve heard lots of bad things about Western Digital HDs but I\'ve had my one (20gig) for a month or two and have had no problems so far. Maybe its just some ones, maybe I just got lucky.
I dunno.

Bring it back if you can, hopefully you didn\'t have anything *too* important on it.

ive hade a 30 gig western dig. for about 6 months and its worked great even when i took it out of a 450mhz p3 and put in a 2.0 ghz p4 it worked great maybe when u and your friends put them in the first time u formatted it wrong try reformating it then use the disk that came with the hard drive to do the partitions over again if this isnt the only hard drive in your sys. try spacing the hard drives out there should be 4 slots for hard drives try using the third one

P.S. the disk that came with the drive also has a diagnostic tool on it try using that see what it says

I got a 15G ATA66 WD no problems.  It\'s over 2 years old.  But that\'s just luck for both of us I\'m sure.

I have had 5 Maxtor\'s and 1 went bad.  The good thing about HD failures is that the companies will usually re-imburse you with a larger capacity drive.

I used to swear by WDs about six years ago, and then I experienced a string of failures on WDs in the PCs I was working on.  My father had a couple of them in one system and they both failed.  The copper pathways lifted up off the pc board on the underside of the drive.  It was very weird and difficult to fix.

Now I\'ve switched over to Maxtors, and had fairly good luck with them.  They are a hell of a lot quieter than WDs also.  Who knows, maybe these will fail in a couple years also.  You just have to back up your stuff obsessively.

I just got an 80gb WD drive the other day. Damn, didn\'t know there were so many probs with WD... I know they\'re not the best HDD manufacturers but it was cheap so I said what the hell...
Now I wish I had bought an IBM or Maxtor instead.

Aparently there has been a recall of certain models of the WD Drives.

There is a list of them.  Didn\'t see if yours was on the list.

That\'s because Maxtor is the devil, damn that company just get\'s on my nerves.

IBM is good, however the 75GXP is supposed to die after only a few months, the 60GXP is supposed to be excellent though.
