There’s an Xbox that’s broken and it isn’t in any living room in America yet. The Xbox demo unit at a nearby Toys R Us store could not give consumers a taste of the new Microsoft console because of severe loading problems. The Xbox unit had no disc inside and displayed a menu screen to access the hard drive and CD player. But customers who tried to navigate through menus could do little else but wait while the machine tried to load the next menu. The audio that accompanied the menu screen transition skipped severely as well. After a three minute wait, the Xbox reached the next screen but continued to have load problems. Multiple resets also failed to resolve the problem. Soon after, a screen appeared that said the Xbox needed customer service repair. The screen provided a list of customer service phone numbers to contact.
Several Toys R Us employees did not know what went wrong with the Xbox demo unit that now carried a “Out of Order” sign. The store received their unit on Tuesday. The in-store demo units are believed to be actual finalized hardware that consumers will see at launch.

GA has received several reports on problems with in-store Xbox units.

An Xbox unit in the Germantown, MD Target store is reported to have "freezing" problems that requires employees to open the kiosk every 75 minutes to reset the console.

An Xbox unit in Software Etc. store in Souix Falls, SD was reported to skip, freeze, and have audio problems.

An Xbox unit at a Babbages store in Mobile, AL was reported to have similar problems.

A Babbages employee at the Dearborn, MI store reports that their Xbox unit does not function.

"Out of five stores that have playable demos within a ten mile area, only two have working units," says the employee.

Microsoft recently delayed the Xbox launch and will ship an unspecified number of units on November 15th. It’s unclear whether load problems were a source for delay. A Microsoft representative was contacted for the story but did not reply at press time.

We’ll have more as it develops, here at GA.

It seems as though fastson\'s "XBOX has the same launch problems as PS2!?" thread had more truth to it than some of you wanted to believe.

thanks for the info! I am gonna delay my purchase because of this.

I am so glad I was informed that an MS product (the only reason this \'news\' was reported anyway) has broken in America.

I feel better knowing that even through my 3 PSXs, I can safely stand back and wait for MS to get this \'problem\' sorted out.

This is a PS2 board, and their is nothing to debate about this topic, other than the fact that every console has potential to break, and since MS OS\'s arent the most stable int he world, this has been how you, ballooned?

I\'ve owned a PSX from Oct. of 1995 and it still plays like a gem. Modded for playing Tobal No2 and Time Crisis (both Japanese versions, actually, Tobal2 never made it to the US).

Out of 70 million, a few skipping PSX is a drop in the sea.

I hope MS takes care of this problem. They don´t need this kind of attention. They don´t want the x-box to be called ugly names like with their OS.
But it is strange that they even shows the kiosks with not 100% stable hardware. They must have known about this. Why risk anything?

They have committed to it, can\'t back down now, their stock might fall. :D  So what if some Green screens of death appear ... ;)

Too bad M$ did not take an AMD processor, and some other Graphics company to bed... the PC industry is in a rot, especially vid-cards + Processors IMO.

Yeah, and I guess the only reason the PS2 problems were reported was because it was a Sony product, right?  If the NGC had these problems, do you think everyone would just ignore them because it is not from Microsoft?  Of course not.  Some people might want to know that the launch Xboxes are having the same problems as the launch PS2s.  I\'m sure some people out there actually care if they are buying a working system.

You keep on bringing that up, yet you are the only one.  I had my PSX since launch (I still have it), and the only problem it ever had was a music skipping problem like four years after I got it.  I sent it in and got it fixed.  I don\'t see how you can go through 3 PSXs.

I don\'t understand what you mean by ballooned, but the reason I posted this is because most people who were looking forward to the Xbox on launch were flat out denying that the Xbox had problems when fastson posted his thread.  If it turns out that the launch Xboxes are faulty, don\'t you want to know about it?

I wouldn\'t worry about it.  I know xbox devs and the xbox team themselves that don\'t have an issue with the final kits.

The information on Nintendo-age is from a Nintendo fanboy of all people.  His name is Lord Federman and he is pro Nintendo and anti-xbox and he lives in Germantown, MD and works at a local Target store there.   He is around 17 years of age and of course he likes Nintendo, he is only a kid and doesn\'t have a job nor is out of high school yet.  This story is on slashdot.  Gee an Anti-Microsoft article at Slashdot.

The problems that did happen were not with the final consumer kits but only with some of the store demo units.

If the consumer units are faulty then yes you should complain to microsoft and say they have crappy hardware, but this problem is unrelated to the consumer xboxes and that has been posted by several devs.

Lets wait and see after Nov 15th and see if there are as many as the PS2\'s that are being returned because of issues.

Anti-Microsoft people are really stupid, they jump for joy at something that isn\'t even related but of course anything anti-microsoft is good right?

It makes me sick at the lack of common sense and understanding of simple concepts that people can not grasp instead they take the mental midget way of thinking.

You really have to wonder if all of that anti-Microsoft rage is just jealousy and simple minded racism.

Kind of like the Rednecks verses the Muslim Terrorists, which one is more simple minded?

If is made like other American made cars...then it\'s sure to break. Just the facts....not an opinion.
