Guess who hates developing for the PS2?
« on: October 28, 2001, 06:19:16 PM »
I saw this comment from an annonymous developer in a recent issue of Next-Gen (It had MAXIMO on the cover):
We are not porting our baseball series to the PS2, unless our publisher forces us to. As a mater of fact as soon as the PS2 is no longer top console we are going to drop it like a hot rock."

These are not his exact words but they are a very good aproximation. He then went on a rant about how expensive and difficult the PS2 was to develop for and blah blah blah.

So the question is, who has a baseball series that is yet to be ported to the PS2? I don\'t know to many baseball games but the only developer I can think that of that has not yet put their baseball series on the PS2 is Visual Concepts.

Assuming this is true and VC hates the Playstation 2 already, what does this say about other developers?

Probably Acclaim, in which case what does it matter? They suck donkey balls anyways.

If it is VC, that doesn\'t matter either, WSB2k2 was no WSB98 (nothing will be that good), you have other choices. if it was EA, though, that would be funny.

I don\'t really play baseball games that much though, so oh well.

Never has a baseball game sold more then 500,000 copies meaning they all stay off the psx\'s greatest hits list, which used to be a million copies btw.  When a game does, then we can srtart to worry.  On a side note, the best baseball game ever was the one with robots by SNK.  I have it for my Neo Geo emulator, I can\'t remember the name, it might be baseball 2010, but I\'m not sure.  Little help Altered?

Probably almost everybody.  But as long as companies can make more money programming for it than other consoles, they will continue to program for the PS2.  If the Xbox ever gets a 15 million user base, I don\'t think the PS2 will have a chance.  But I don\'t think I\'ll have to worry about that for at least 2 or 3 years. :)

There are the few people who actually like tinkering around with things, and those people probably love the PS2.  But other than those few people, I can\'t see why anyone would program for the PS2 (other than the PS2\'s userbase) when there is the Xbox and NGC that can do equally impressive, if not more impressive stuff way easier.

I just hope the dev kits can make programming the PS2 a lot easier.  Not only because I want the PS2 to stay alive for this whole console generation, but also so the developers don\'t go crazy. :D

Oh, and who cares about Baseball?!  America\'s favorite passtime?  Ha!  What a joke.  Baseball is the worst sport EVER.  (IMO -- no offense to anyone)

I think I put the emphasis of my post in the wrong place.

What I\'m really worried about is that if it is VC then they are saying that as soon as PS2 is no longer the console with the largest install base, they will "drop it like a hot rock".

If a lot of other development houses feel this way then it goes to show that the PS2\'s intall base is more than crucial for it\'s succes. If the X-Box or CG surpass it in userbase will PS2 users be left out in the cold?

And no, I don\'t give a sh*t about baseball games either.

Personally I hate the Acclaim series and I am jealous that the PS2 gets the High Heats series all themselves!  There is nothing like a real sim!

Do you know how much it cost to program a game for ps2? I read somewhere it was in the millions.

I doubt it\'s EA or Acclaim. More likely it\'s VC. Sony has been good to EA they have nothing to complain about.  In anycase nobody cares about baseball games anyways. But if they are saying this about there baseball series. Just imagine how they feel about the rest of there franchises.

I have a hard time believing that.  There are initial startup costs with obtaining an SDK, but beyond that you have license fees plus your internal costs, which is whatever the company is willing to spend.

And adding to what EmperorRob said:

Do you realize that any company can make tons more money programming for a console with a 15 million userbase than programming for a console with a 1 million userbase?  The costs for programming the game on the PS2 are irrelevant when they can make so much money by doing it.

Bah ! I don\'t like sports videogames, just go play outside in real life ! I do like to play baseball in real life, but that was long ago when I was still in high school.
But ehh, wasn\'t it Square that was gonna make a PS2 baseball game ?
But anyway, the point is that PS2 games are getting better looking by now and that fact does say alot about devs their PS2 programming progress.
