Interesting interview with Sony Europe.

Some interesting stuff:

Every new game we start writing internally - whether in Soho, Liverpool or Cambridge - has online features built into the game design. The new Tony Hawk\'s game has an online feature. SCEA has games called Frequency and Navy Seals that are clearly online oriented. There\'s a special version of Twisted Metal, which I\'ve seen played on simulated Ethernet LANs.

You probably read about the fact that we have a program analyser - it\'s a device that analyses the efficiency of programs. On PSone it took us about four years to get one of those things, and now we have a couple next door and people come and put their games through it. It\'s very revealing that even a game like GT3, which everybody said, "wow, that\'s what PS2\'s about" only uses about 25 percent of the capacity. What it says is that as people learn to get more out of the various elements, the chips and the BUS, etc, that you\'re going to see some really exciting stuff.

So I see this PA2 is gods gift to the developers? :eyemouth:

Anyway, it is a good read, especially the bit where he says that GT3 only uses 25% of the PS2\'s power! :eek: . Xbox look out!!:laughing:

If GT3 is only using 25% I would REALLY like to see 100% That would be incredible. :eek: :eek: :eek:

and if it still proves to be too hard for developers then they will never get the full power out of the PS2

As I have said before..
PA2 and other programs (ie. Vector-C) will help developers tapping out some more power..

As it says in the interview:

Yes, there are a lot of ways that the architecture could have been done to make it easier at the beginning, but this is the only way to get an architecture that can have a five year life where the games constantly improve. I mean, look at GT2 compared to Ridge Racer 1. PSone made heavy use of a PC dev kit. PS2 is a new approach so that we get maximum flexibility and huge bus width... The difference between PlayStation 2 and the other machines coming out is that the various components can do different things at the same time, they can share workloads, there\'s no downtime, it\'s not sequential. It\'s kind of multi tasking, you can create graphics from here from there, you can make sound from here from there, so it\'s very flexible, a very powerful combination of engine and transmission.

PA1 made a hell of a difference on PSX..
Just think what it can do on PS2? (Considering the new architecture)

Yup, 2002 is gonna be one hell of a year for PS2 I think, kicking of with Metal Gear Solid 2, Virtua Fighter 4, The Getaway, ICO, all graphically awesome PS2 games

Yeah I agree. This is a Sony guy talking after all I mean hes bound to say stuff like this - not saying its not true - but hes hardly going to say something like "GT3 maxed the ps2 thats it! You\'ve seen what your Ps2 can do now lets all wait for Ps3, since Ps3 is the true competitor to XBox and GameCube".

Also this is a Sony Europe guy - Mr lets not add 50 / 60Hz for our games and lets let the european market wait for games. Ok maybe he doesn\'t quiet make them decisions but I bet he has a powerful say in it.

If GT3 maxed out PS2.. I dont think he would have mentioned it from the beginning..

Oh and if you read the interview he talks about  a "lag" in the market..
Thats why it takes so long for PAL games to come out. (Cuz we are 5 months after the Japanese.. Its going to shrink though..)

It\'s also been said by developers that GT3 doesn\'t come close to maxing out PS2.

DDaryl said nothing of the above not to be true. Of course you should wait and see for your own eyes. But don\'t forget, the article is only reporting from a technical standpoint (this is what could be done), but it\'s still up to the developers to get that on screen. He said that we will see some exciting stuff, and let me tell you, what I have seen at the business event by Sony is pretty amazing stuff (not posted in my previous impressions).

what has his decision "lets not add 50/60 Hz for our games" got anything to do with the above interview?? Please... first of all, it\'s the 60 Hz that Europe is missing (not 50 Hz) and why should that be his decision? If he had anything to do with some kind of decision you\'re going on about, we wouldn\'t even see DoA2 with that NTSC option in it. So please, before you blame some high up manager at Sony or who ever, please think before you actually write down something like that. Perhaps blame the developers. I won\'t even start the delay issue on Europe: I am from Europe aswell, but I\'m sure you can think of some good reasons why we get our games last.

Ok first read what I wrote. I said that he wouldn\'t say about GT3 maxing out the PS2 if it actually did do that, I didn\'t say that it was MY OPINION that Gt3 maxed out the ps2.

Secondly 50/60hz means you can choose from 50/60Hz. Of course I knew that europe already had 50hz. I mean come on, if I knew about 50/60hz then you could probably have an educated guess that I knew that europe had 50hz.

Once again DDaryl is right doesn\'t mean he agreed with what I said, it means that DDaryl is right in what he said.

okay, sorry about that, I was just kind a annoyed when I read your post. Anyway, the point still is, you\'re picking on the wrong guy if you want 50/60 Hz included and that europe gets its games faster. I have every reason to be just as pissed as you because I am from Europe aswell, but come on - judging this guys credability just because we don\'t get the things the way we want is just not fair. I saw some wonderful and just as amazing stuff at the Sony business event that I was invited too, so I have every reason to believe that things will get very exciting.

games will always be later in Europe due to the fact that most games are developed either in America or Japan. And for the games that are developed in Japan, America will always come in second since it uses the same system (NTSC), there is only one language to take into consideration, and the market share is just as big (if not bigger) than Europe. It sucks, I know man - heck I hate to be one of ones to wait 90 days until MGS2 hits us.. but that\'s just the way it is and blaming it on some Sony guy high just won\'t help. But hey, it did get better in Europe. Just think back... PSX was pretty bad and at least now we seem to be getting our games faster.

As for the 50/60 Hz option. Yes, it would be nice for the games that are sloppy ports (Ridge Racer, Resident Evil: CV), but as for the rest, I don\'t think it\'s that bad. A game running at 50 fps per second is hardly noticable to one that is running at 60, plus we get to play it at a higher resolution (PAL has better resolution than NTSC!), so it\'s not all that bad.
