TOKYO--Sony Corp said on Monday it will cut the suggested retail price of its PlayStation 2 game console in Japan by 15 percent to 29,800 yen (US$239.60) on November 29 and start selling the machine in several Asian markets in December.

The company had cut the domestic price in June to 35,000 yen.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc, the Sony unit that makes and sells the PlayStation, said it will begin selling the PlayStation 2 in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand on December 13, followed by Taiwan on January 24, 2002.

Competition in the high-stakes game machine market has been expected to heat up following the recent launch of next-generation consoles by Nintendo Ltd and market newcomer Microsoft Corp.

Without support from Japan and Europe, the NGC and Xbox won\'t have a chance this generation. Sony knows this, so they are taking advantage of it.

They lowered the price to $300 in Europe, and because they aren\'t competing against anyone else, this is perfectly fine.  In Japan, they are lowering it to $240 to compete with the NGCs low price.  This could get very interesting.  Will Pikmin and SSBM be enough to hold off the PS2 this year?

now I left singapore and the FINALLY start to sell it there and for a cheap price WFT?? I hate you sony, someone damn them to hell!!

I hope another euro/US price drop follows soon, getting a new ps2 inn just a matter of a few weeks

The prices are pretty low here too. I can get a brand spanking new PS2 for $270. And that\'s with the 25% VAT... Oh, and that\'s with a 2-year warrantee!

Hmm... Perhaps I should pick one up soon.

Here in Holland ps2 still is F 699 (F 679 at cheapest) which is around 300 $US  

Hmm, that\'s interesting, back when Dreamcast got it\'s first price cut, everyone was saying it was cause they were scared.

And here comes Altered with this "double standard" stuff.  How predictable.  But don\'t worry;  If you didn\'t say it, some other Dreamcast lover would have.

Sega was not in the same situation that Sony is in now.  Their userbase was miniscule compared to the PS2s, they didn\'t have a hold on the European market like Sony does, and they didn\'t have the overall goal of world domination like Sony does (Sega\'s goal was just to stay alive, and to get their good name back after their previous blunders [32X, Sega CD].)  Sega\'s reputation was not very good, and their product was not as in damand as the PS2 is.

Come on Altered.  Can you honestly not see what this price drop could do to both Microsoft and Nintendo?

In Norway you can get it for 250 bucks most places now which is a good price IMO.

thanks for the info IronFist. Indeed bad news for both GameCube and Xbox. It will be very interesting to see how this reflects on the selling chart.

Here in Europe (Switzerland), you can get it for 499 CHF. (it was launched at a price of 699.- in november), so the demand went up again. Xbox will launch at I think about 800 when it comes out here in march.. I doubt it will stand a good chance in europe as of yet.

I\'m not as interested in seeing how successful the PS2 will be nearly as much as seeing how Nintendo and Microsoft will defend against this.  The war has finally begun.  This is where it gets fun.

What the hell does the dreamcast have to do with the price drop of the PS2, no matter what a topic is about you find a way to mention sega

but anyway i think its cool but i wish they would have done this here in the us for christmas - there were a lot of people waiting for it and now they are just gonna make other decisions come this christmas

maybe they are over confident here because in the greatest country in the world USA. It is still 299.99.

And can ironfist tell me what this price drops does to microsoft and nintendo plz. Because No matter what ms or nintendo do over in asian markets sony still will be number one there.

 nintendo will sell well because ps2 is still higher and gamers over there no nintendo. MS would  be satisfied with picking up 20% of that market.
