TV\'s and S-VIDEO
« on: December 05, 2001, 06:44:47 PM »
I have a 27 inch monitor TV in my basement.  It has the usual red, white, and yellow plugs in the back.  Now my question is that, do the S-Video cable plug into those holes?  I don\'t think they do but I was just wondering?  By the way what is the best brand of cable to buy?  I\'m trying to pick between Sony, and Monster cables.  I heard there really isn\'t a difference, but I wanted some opinions.

If S-Video cables cannot plug into the back of those ports, is there an adapter that can make them fit?  I highly doubt all of this, but I\'m asking for someone else.

Thanks Guys.

PS.  Once last question, what is better S-Video, or Component?  I really don\'t know the difference.

S Video is a circular chaped plug that has 5 or so pins

composite cables are the best followed by S-Video and I thought Componet cables are the red white yellow

I could be wrong on that one but I do know S-Video is the middle in quality, and if your TV doesn\'t support S-Video it won\'t support anythig else but those RED YELLOW AND White plugs

so how\'s it been hanging Stud ?? I\'
ve seen yourname on the who\'s on the board notifier but never see you posting

S-video won\'t plug in to your set and there\'s no adapter you could use to take advantage of it. :(

For RCA cables, go for the Sony.

Component is better than S-video, but on 480i sources (ie- the ps2) the difference is just about not noticeable, especially on 27" TVs.  The colors of these cables are green, blue, and red.

Hey BeerStud, I\'ve used S-video cable since N64 and I tell you, do what ever you have to make this happen.   With S-video cable it\'s night and day differents.  I think your tv don\'t suport s-video cables but buy a tv that does.   I\'m using the sony brand s-video cables with a 20" Sony 20V80 tv.  Looks clean and sharp.  You can see more details and lifely colors too.  :D

IMO, go for the Monstor cables, thats what I have for mine, great audio. It may be a little on the expensive side but its well worth it... VERY trusty cables, very durable also.

As THX said, Component is the best, followed by S-Video and then Composite.  If your TV does not have an S-Video input, than there is nothing you can do about it, your best image will come from Composite connections (yellow plug for video signal, red and white plugs for your 2 channel audio).  Generally speaking, the difference from Composite to S-Video is usually quite noticable.  The difference from S-Video to Component will be most noticable proportional to the quality and size of your TV.  In other words, you will see a greater improvement in color and definition proportional to the size and quality of your TV monitor.  On a small to medium size monitor (up to 30" or so) the difference may be only slight.  But on larger rear projection TV\'s, the difference can be startling.  On my widescreen rear projection TV, there is a considerable improvement in video quality by going from  S-Video to Component, especially in color saturation and improved definition.  Regarding cables, the same logic applies.  That is, the larger your screen and the better the quality of your TV, the more it pays to spend extra for the expensive cables (Monster brand for example).  Hope this helps.

Bozco,

It\'s hard to answer that question without actually trying the Monster Cables.  Keep in mind that over time, cables can go bad, especially the cheap ones.  The metal in the cables can oxidize and in some instances may actually just stop transmitting signals.  The cables that came with your PS2 can\'t be that old, so as long as they are not damaged they are probably still doing an adequate job.  I would suggest that you try out a pair of good quality cables by purchasing them at Best Buy or some other retail store that has a good return policy.  Don\'t be surprised if you don\'t notice much of an improvement.  If that\'s the case you just return them and apply the credit towards a game :D.

Good Luck

Yeah, I think your right, but since my tv is junk and is very old I\'m looking around on the internet for a new tv, I might ask for a new tv for christmas, so far I\'ve been looking at 20" flat screen tvs that offer component connnections in back, those have been goin for around 300$, I think its worth it
