Playstation 2 "Disc Read Error"
« on: December 16, 2001, 09:22:47 AM »
My PS2 no longer plays any CD-format discs.  Only DVD-format discs will work.  I have heard of this happening to other PS2 owners, namely those that purchased their consoles at or near the launch date in October of 2000.

SCEA customer support offers to fix after-warranty PS2s for a fee of $120, nearly 40% of the initial puchase price.  This amount for a problem that has emerged out of normal use.

Mysteriously, many of the forum posts that I have read recently regarding this problem have disappeared in the last week.

Is anyone else having any problems like this?

I had the same error. What I did was I bought a CD/DVD cleaner from Radio Shack and threw it in. It worked pretty good. After a few tries my PS2 worked just like new. You should try it, you have nothing left to lose. I saw at Toys R Us that there is a special cleaner made for the PS2. I don\'t know how good that works.

I have had this problem with only one dvd that I have, and for some odd reason cd/dvd cleaners wont work. It still wont play just this one certain dvd. Im confused as hell. I still have the dvd, Ive tried taking it back and getting a brand new one... Still the same problem. That dvd still awaits correction. :(

Yes that happens to me quite regularly too. I will have to buy some CD lens cleaner from Radioshack or something too. So do i just spray the stuff on the lens and wipe with something or what?

The one I used I got from Blockbuster, it was a newer one, it just had bristles on it, and when you put it in the PS2 you would go through like you were playing a music cd, it even had tracks like a music cd, and once you played through the whole thing it was cleaned

Oh stupid me... You mean its just like a CD that you buy and you stick it in and it cleans it like that? How much does that cost anyways?

I\'ve been having the same problems....

Bought the lens cleaner / cd cleaner combo pack at Wal-Mart for aroung $10. The only problem is that the cleaner disc comes up with the same error, so I can\'t use it to clean my console.

I\'m planning on buying a new PS2, switching the main consoles, then returning it for a refund.... sure it\'s dishonest, but so is selling defective PS2\'s. :p

Yeah, I bought the official PS2 magazine and was very excited to have a go at Soul Reaver 2.  The only problem is that the DVD does not work on my PS2.  I took it tomy next door neigbour, who has a PS2 ass well, and it worked!?!?!

All my other CD/DVD\'s work...except that one.  What do you guys think the problem is?...I have even used a lense cleaner and still no success???....It gets better....A red screen comes up asking me to insert a Playstation or Playstation2 disk, but as I said, it works without problem on my neigbours PS2.  Can anyone explain this? Is my PS2 coming to an end?
