I have a dream! (Tell me what you think)
« on: December 17, 2001, 07:15:14 PM »
Jus thought I\'d get some input from some fellow gamers about a pretty big decision I\'m about to make. Basically, I\'m tired of working for other people and I think it\'s about time I started being the boss, and doing something that I love while I\'m at it. I\'m thinking of opening up a Videogame trader shop here in Warsaw. I\'ve decided on the name "Valhalla Games: The digital warrior\'s paradice", and a location. Main street is still filled up with the old 20\'s buildings the historical preservation society won\'t allow the city to tear down, so there\'s plenty of space for my shop below and a 2 bedroom/1bath apartment upstairs being rented out as one. (Figure I can cut out rent by LIVING above my shop)

That\'s jus the beginning. I figure if I take almost every penny earned and put it back into my buisness (all the while recording a loss on my taxes :D ) I figure within five years time I\'ll be finacially solid enough to move into a seperate apartment and turn the upstairs (or downstairs) shop into a full Arcade filled with both vintage and modern Arcade games.

Warsaw is, I think, a prime location also. It\'s growing VERY rapidly, and attracts alot of welthier consumers because of the numerous biometics plants. (Orthopedic capital of the world actually). Since I\'d be located about a stones throw away from a copshop, I think I can expect crime and vandalism to be at a minimum.

There is virtually no competition within 40 miles, and I figure if I also rely on the internet to both Sell games and buy more inventory, then that\'s all the more chance I have to make this venture a success.

I\'ve already talked briefly to H & R Block who have told me that getting a buisness loan should not be a problem (Tho I\'d have to talk to them more in depth with them to determin how much of which I\'d be eligible for) and in exchange for me agreeing to let them do my taxes for a set period of time, they will actually teach me how to run my buisness for free. Also, intrest rates are at a 40 year low. Everyone I\'ve talked to has told me that right now is THE prime time to open up a buisness.

I\'m sure there\'s alot of things I\'m not considering, and the very Roms and ABwares scenes that I love could damage my potential sales quite a bit. I know it won\'t be easy, but I really think I can make it work. And hey, who here wouldn\'t kill to own a buisness where all you basically do is collect, play, repair, and sell videogames?!?

What do you guys think? Should I go for it? Do I have a good basic plan? Would you buy games and inports from my buisness over the net?

if thats what you end up doing, CONGRATS!!! I wish you all of the success in the world. If you truely want to do that, I suggest you pursue it. You never know what you are capable of untill you attempt it. It may be the next nationwide chain :)

I dunno Racer, Old man McVan up in Fort Wayne is sittin on a pretty hill of cash now with 4 citywide outlets. S\'ides, I don\'t wanna be rich. I just want enough cash to not have to worry about lil things and to afford some of the nicer things in life without having to worry about taking out a 10 year loan with my house and car as collateral ya know. And I wanna be my own boss. I don\'t wanna have to take orders from some slavedriver who rewards (or at least won\'t fire) lazy people while makin everyone else who\'s concerned with doing a good job double their workload.

Sides, it wouldn\'t jus be old videogames and systems.. It\'d be the newer stuff too, and eventually hopefully branch out into computers, music, and all sorts of digital entertainment. That\'s they key here... Digital Entertainment. It\'s just going to start out with and somewhat center around games.

If you\'re really going to do this you should concentrate on just one area : video games.  I\'d leave out the electronics/digital music idea for the time being.

Right now though, I personally wouldn\'t do it.  I\'ve seen the declining economy and seen the layoffs inside my own comapny as well.  I would wait until business goes back up.  But then again I am a naysayer.

One word of warning, the more money you make, the more you\'ll want b/c you\'ll also keep looking at those things that are just out of your price range.

yeah man...there are got to be reasons as to why not even a single shop like that within 40 miles...

gotta consider those things before you go do it.;)

I think that is a very interesting idea.

You have to make sure that people in that area are interested in games, though! Lionken has a point, maybe ppl in that area aren\'t interested in VG\'s that\'s why they don\'t have a VG shop within 40 miles.

Maybe most of the people that live in that area are senior citizens. (I doubt this one)

But, if you truly know what you are doing, I say go for it.

The big thing is interest in the community. Do you live in an extremely rural area? If so - it would be a lot more difficult to have the business. If you lived in the middle of a city or something, then you could probably pull it off with ease. It\'s all about location and interest. If you\'ve got those two things on your side, then you should be fine.

Good luck!

Oh and one more thing, you have to take account that when there is a system launch you may not be able to get stock on them. A classic example is the N64 and PS2 launches where a shortage caused all the "mom and pop" stores not to get their shipment in....Just food for thought.

So SonyFan, any news on this subject? I think it is/was a cool plan and one I might attempt at a later stage of my life. I too would like to be my own boss some day. :)

So, if you\'re reading this... give us a status report! :D

:*Update - 4/4/02*:

I\'m broke, and I just NOW got wheels back. Can\'t start much of a buisness when you\'re scraping for cigarette change. I\'ve got a tour of IVY tech state collage tomorrow where I\'m gonna pick up a digree in Small Buisness management. I\'m also gathering resources and information on Gov\'t grants & loans. If I\'m lucky, I can get up to $100,000 or more depending on my qualifications. I jus hope that\'s enough to get the ball rolling. There\'s also a chance I could be moving to Spokane Washington sometime in the future.. so that\'d kinda kill any startup buisness ideas.

I don\'t expect to start this thing up overnight, but I\'d like to get started on it in the next five years if possible. Thanks for the interest tho guys. :D :D :D

It looks like you wanted to buy the building.  If you buy the building I think you have to depreciate it over an obscene length of time.  Don\'t quote me on it, but I think it\'s like 30 years.  So for taxes, that kind of sucks.  Renting on the other hand is a solid expense all the way around.  Just a thought.  You will learn that of course in business school.
