Do kids appreciate gaming the way it should be appreciated?

The reason for this question is that I had my brothers two children, 8 & 10, at my house for the weekend.  They were playing Tekken 3 on the PS1.  After a while I switched to the PS2 and they had a go at Dead or Alive 2.  They carried on with the game as if nothing had changed?

Now, I\'m 24 and have gone through most of the gaming history and I am totally amazed with the games that are available today.  The originality, graphics, gameplay and sound has all improved so much in the past 20 years.

They lost out on the good old games and will probably never play them.  Is anyone going to tell me that Mario, FFVI, Sonic, Double Dragon. etc was crud???...I don\'t think so.  So, you should actually feel sorry for them.

What do you guys think?

As long as the kids never played the old 8/16 bit graphics games (or even older than that), they are bound to not care about graphical leap from Tekken 3 to DOA2:HC.  And unfortunately, they probably never will understand how beautiful games are compared to older games.  With graphics getting closer and closer to the level of diminishing return, the graphics will never improve enough for them to appreciate them like we do.  It is kind of sad that all the hard work from 70s, 80s, and 90s that got us where we are today is quickly being forgotten, but it really isn\'t that surprising.  I mean, can you blame them for not knowing the past accomplishments in the video game industry?  In this case, ignorance is not bliss -- actually taking some of the excitement and enjoyment out of the video games we have today.

Its not that bad. The same can be said about many other things through the generation gap.

They may miss out on what we have seen in terms of gaming but there going to have their own expirences of gaming.

Oh well, I\'ll make a plan to show the youngsters in our family what happened in the past to make the games end up the way it is today.

You go home and play Kungfu Master on your Nintendo and afterwards play DOA2...you then realize how far the game industry has come.:rolleyes:

Ha ! I\'d suggest we all buy some retro system now so we can  show our kids ( if you\'ll have..) with which fantastic games we
grew up. I still would like to go out and buy a Sega genesis or
a Master system II. Alex kidd in Miracle world and Mickey Mouse
and the castle of illiusions were great ! Then again... I have a tough time saving up money for PS2 games.

When our family gathers for Christmas or Thanksgiving, or whatever, I never allowed my Nieces and Nephews to play the next gen systems. It started out because they have no respect for other peoples propery and CD\'s are easily scratched. Now, I think it\'s kind of tradition. Suprisingly, they actually PREFER to play the Mastersystem, Genesis, NES, and my older systems rather than the newer ones.

Depending on the age of the kid, I think it has less to do with not appreceating gamings past.. and more to do with what we all as gamers should be doing. Ignoring graphics and playing a game because it\'s fun.

There\'s absolutely nothing wrong with drooling on yourself over the latest graphical updates, but alot of people only want the biggest, fastest, highest Rez.. and nothing else will do. That defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place. If you want superdetailed graphics and could give a fukk less about the game.. then jus buy Shrek or ToyStory 2. (If ya want interactivity also then jus buy the DVD) If you want good games, then buy good games, regarless of the system their on. Don\'t let brand loyalty or "graphics whoring" restrict your enjoyment.

Kids play the games to have fun not to look at how great the graphics are, especially at those ages, not til u are about 12 do u start caring how the game looks that you are playing.:eek:

Actually I think this is a very good thread.

I\'ve talked about this with some friends in the past,.. who are around the same age as I, and I can say that that my generation is great.

Having grown up with the 2600, and having been gaming up to now, I can enjoy all the great new series of games, and cherish the ones of the past.

It\'s a shame some kids from today won\'t know where the Castlevanias, Street Fighters, Super Marios, Sonics, etc, originated from. The whole 2D concept eludes them. Most gamers from today are accustomed to their Tomb Raiders, Crash Bandicoots, Pokemons, etc.

And to a smaller extent, I wish some of you hardcore Final Fantasy Fans, got to experience them from the start. Having played the series since part 1, it\'s kind of nice, and sad, to see where they have gone. The last true Final Fantasy was IX, sadly.

I have honestly only played FF6, 7 and 8.  When the PS2 came into action I lost intrest and bought PS2 games....but I am now going to get FF9!!...just think...our kids will be playing FF21 and would have missed out on everything else.  I think we should keep all our games and consoles of the past, so that we can give them a taste of what was around before their time.

I think this topic is actually a great topic cause if you think about it the kids who don\'t appreciate the leaps and bounds in the games industry could affect the future of it...
I mean it\'s kind of like trying to follow a soap opera from the beginning...you have to have watched it from the start to understand it better...
I admit I can remember putting my 10 pence pieces into Pac Man and Pole Position and watching the pretty loading screens on the C64 and I do admit that seeing the old games like Sonic The Hedgehog or Super Mario Bros evolve into games like Sonic Adventure 2 on the Gamecube and Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube, still fill me with the same excitement as I did when I unwrapped my copy of Super Mario Bros 3 or even set up my Mega Drive for the first time...
So unless they were there to see the retro games and consoles they can\'t actually say anything about the changes in the industry...
When you were all kids as well, did you? I didn\'t go on about the changes as I was addicted to Mario 3 among others...they\'ll see it when they get older!
Try pulling them away from their game boys and copies of Pokemon and lecture them bout it...
