I didn\'t know much about sega untill they launched their DC is US. Before that I saw them as a 2nd rate console developer.
Im sorry but is sega\'s own stupid fault
Well, Metal_Gear_Ray, I think I have to correct you on this one.
My days as a \'videogameconsole\' player started with the Sega
Mastersystem II back in 1990 I believe, or was it 1989 ( I only played PC games before that).
Anyways, Sega was very aggressive in advertising back then, yeah even in little ol\' Holland. Remember the Sega Mastersystem 1 tv commercial ? The black/red console ? It\'s userbase grew and it became a big opponent of Nintendo\'s succesfull NES. Ha, I remeber when ppl paid 400 DFL for a NES duck hunt pack ! Anyway, I bought my Mastersystem II when Sega was already promoting the Megadrive (that\'s the Genesis for Americans) and the superhit \'Sonic the HedgeHog\'. So... actually Sega was kinda the \'Sony- like\' opposition for Nintendo back in those days. In my opinion Sega wasn\'t a 2nd rate console maker, certainly not. And it was really a good opposition at that. Somehow I chose the Megadrive over the SNES and it was only in the later stage of their lifecycles that the SNES caught up with the Megadrive. I believe it happened when the SNES got Street Fighter II. That\'s when the tables turned, albeit slightly. Sega was still hot.
But after some time, console land started to slow down. Nintendo went on fairly steady with the SNES. Then Sega introduced the Megadrive II and the 32X add on + Mega CD drive for it. From there on, things went down for Sega. Some lackluster times passed even more.
Sony came along with the PSX. Sega tried to fire up good ol times
again with the Saturn... and we all know what happened since...
So my conclusion is that Sega in Benelux was a BIG succes until the Megadrive II (which was actually just the Megadrive in another casing with addon conections, kinda like a PSone.)
A friend of mine has a DC and I play sometimes. Nowadays you can notice it\'s graphically getting a bit old (lower polycounts and stuff like that) compared to 2nd gen PS2, XBOX and NGC games, but the visual quality of DC is still very good. From the ppl I know,
DC was not dead on arrival. It was friggin hot. Demand was too high because the distributer Atoll Soft underestimated it. Because of that ppl eventually gave up and the DC died in Holland. I think it was just a bad pick by Sega to let Atoll Soft do the DC promoting/distributing job. Just read the PU and see Dutch ppl love DC because it\'s good for a fairly cheap price.
If I had money enough, I \'d ran out now and buy a GBA with Sonic
when that\'s released ! Damn, I would also like to play Alex Kidd again.
