My PS2 Broke :(
« on: December 25, 2001, 12:53:43 PM »
For some reason whenever i put in a normal format PS2 CD or Non-Burned music CD they will not read.  If i pop in a DVD or DVD game they load up just fine.  My PS2 is out of warranty. Anyone else had/fixed this problem?

Welcome to the forums.

So many people have expirenced this problem recently. The solution is to use a CD Cleaner. If your PS2 won\'t read that then its bad luck.

Same problem!! It plays DVD\'s fine but not Cd rom games!!!
Way out of warranty. Sent it to Best Buy to be cleaned. Still not reading CD ROm games but their DVD games work fine. How could dirty laser only affect Cd Rom games. Doesn\'t sound like a dirty laser.
It also makes a weird spinning noise when trying to read CD Rom games. Then you get disc error!!!
Anybody got any ideas??

My PS2 is now taking longer to boot up a game then when I first got it.... Strange..... I get the feeling I should try and get the latest and greatest ps2, and take my old ps2 and switch boxes and get my money back.. Just to solve those future problems...

But I first need $300! YEAH RIGHT!...

I need a job..:(
.... take the skin and peel and back...

now doesn\'t it make you feel better?

Never encountered the problem myself but I can speculate. The PS2 uses a single variable wavelength pickup system to read both optical formats. For some reason it may be that your system is having trouble changing the wavelength to read CD. It may be using the DVD wavelength to read CDs and getting disc errors.

In this case, a lens cleaner will do nothing to fix your problems. Call up SCEA tech support and demand repairs. If the charge is not to your liking, raise hell and they should surrender. Tech support is not terribly difficult to intimidate. Swapping at a store is an option for some, though I personally think it is stealing.
