DVD compatablilty
« on: December 27, 2001, 09:40:32 PM »
Me and my folks got my younger brother a ps2 and a couple a game\'s for christmas.  Needless to say ive got to pick up one for myself or the xbox am still undecided.  The factor that will sway my purchase either way comes down to DVD compatablitly.  The way i understand it that there is a issue with early ps2\'s play\'n all dvd\'s.  Is this true?  Is there still a issue with newer released models?  Havnt seen anything about the xbox\'s dvd recondition software but its so new its expected.

FYI GTA 3 is awesome and if the graphics on the xbox are anybetter i wouldnt be able to tell anyway!

Thanx

Welcome to the forums:)

Im pretty sure that most of the problems have been worked out with the early dvd bugs.  I dont think you have to worry about it for the newer models.

Does the X-box even have a dvd player? I know that it was supposed to but didnt they scratch it and set it as an add-on?  Or does it have one?  I dunno maybe it does but i could care less.

Due to loose DVD specifications many DVD players have problems with certain DVD discs.

The PS2 however due to the massive amount of sales got a lot of attention drawn to its problems making them worse than what they seem.

Some discs (like other discs on other dvd players) simply refuse to play. The list is small and gets smaller with every revision of the PS2 drivers. I think Toy Story box set extras DVD was one of the discs which didn\'t play.

Another problem was lip sync. I\'ve never seen this problem myself but i\'ve only played 4 DVD movies on my machine. Sony say its a DVD thing and it happens on other DVD players.

So in short the problems are very small even though there has been a lot of attention towards it. Also since the PS2 is owned by more people than one type of DVD player then you now get the compatable with PS2 on DVD cases for more reassurance, whether you get that with X-Box is another question.

i think its more like 20 bucks.  Its just a remote that looks almost just like the ps2 remote.  The reason you need it is the xbox doesnt have a infrared sensor built in.  The sensor you get with the remote and plugs into a controller slot.  Not a big issue for me because i would pop for the 20 bones to get the remote either way but i dont know why they didnt equip the game controller with dvd controll functions.

Thanx for the info.  BTW where can i find this list of non compatable dvd\'s on the net?

peace

No, the x-box DVD kit for DVD playback features is more like 30 bucks and is required to watch any dvd videos. Here\'s a link if you still have doubts.  29.99+tax and shipping.

As for the PS2, buy your system from a trusted retailer offering an extended warranty like Electronics Boutique, Software Etc, or Babbages.  Skip the 30 bucks for the X-Box DVD remote and go with the two year warranty instead.  That way, you are guaranteed a brand new system if anything happens to your Playstation 2.

Sorry guys, but I´m sick of ppl asking about the "DVD issue" on PS2 !
There are NO problems at all... most ppl are just ignorants when it comes to DVD ! I hear some ppl asking "There are big black bars on my TV... is it because of a PAL problem..." or "My PS2 stops for 1 Sec. in the middle of a movie, is there anything wrong ?"
OK, there are a few disks that won´t play so nice, but I´ve watched 100 and more DVD´s on my PS2 and only 2 made problems (I think it was Star Trek (skipping) and Vampires Night (skipping some tracks too)...
There are tests in the net that say - PS2 is a very good DVD Player - it has a great picture and sound... and YES, all DVD Players have their problems with some DVD´s, there are special pages about that in the net, too !
The X-Box is a joke when it comes to playback DVD´s... it don´t has an optical-out and the rest must be bought as an "Add-On"... pfff
Get a PS2...
play the great Games...
watch a good Movie...
HAVE FUN !!!
:D

I understood it was required.  No DVD functions on the xbox controller and no remote means no DVD.  Im not going to buy either it or the ps2  online anyway i can get the ps2 at wallmart anytime i want and will prolly get the warrenty through them.

I gave a link to the online pricing because EB, both online and in stores usually charges the MSRP.  If it\'s 30 bucks on their site, then chances are, that\'s the MSRP.  Go where you want to buy your stuff, I don\'t care, just don\'t get a system for its DVD capabilities.  Get it for the games, and if you\'re on this forum, you\'re obviously interested in the best part of owning the PS2, the biggest and greatest library of games.

For 300 bones im sure as hell going to base half of my decision on DVD functionality and the other half on the games.  300 bucks spent for the sole purpose to play some games is a little excessive and to some of you hardcore console addicts putting that into writing must be a taboo of some sort.  Games i might add that i can get compareable titles for my PC.  And since im on this forum i must have a PC.  I like game\'s,  dont get me wrong.  One of my biggest headache\'s is game crashes and HD failure\'s that come along with pc gaming.  Im going to own a DVD player. I figure that i can get a DVD player that i can play killer game\'s on for 300 bucks or i can get a DVD player that just plays DVD\'s for $175. Thats IT.

Thanx EYE thats pretty much all i need\'d to hear.  I myself am not DVD ignorant just PS2 ignorant at this point.  I just would have been extremely jacked if i had gotten a bunch of DVD\'s that didnt work and the thought of "Hit and Miss" of the DVD\'s didnt really sound that great to me.

I´m not saying that you are ignorant !
I just wanted to show how those things get started...
98% of these "issues" aren´t a DVD or PS2 Problem.
1% is, because we hear so much about PS2 on the net (there are more DVD Players, but those aren´t so much discussed)
and only 1% are true errors, "due to loose DVD specifications"...
But that is NO FAULT of the PS2 !
I just LOVE to playback a DVD on my PS2, the sound is superb, so is the picture and the SONY remote is just great, too...
...nothing more to say on this "issue" ! :)
