« on: January 05, 2002, 11:17:12 PM »
My sister just bought a 46" HDTV widescreen for $2,100.  It Brand is mitsubishi.  She have problem with the air channels.  It doesn\'t show out that good.  It fussy, blurry and sizzling even with the standard antennae.

Does she need hdtv antennae or what.  And what about hdtv tuner?  If so, how much does it cost?

In order to receive digital channels you need a decent UHF antenna.  Well usually it\'s a UHF antenna.  Really it depends on where you live and what the channel numbers are.  Some TVs have tuners, some do not.  I use the RCA DTC-100.  You can find them open box all the time at Circuit City.  It is a Direct-TV tuner, but it also does the OTA digital signal as well.  In order to get full potential out of the HD unit, you must get a tuner.  ABC, CBS, and soon NBC, will all have a heck of a lot offered in HD.  The Olympics will have a lot in HD this year for the first time ever in the states.

Anyway, without knowing the model number I can\'t be sure if she has a tuner built in, but for that price I doubt it.  Most do not come with tuners because it keeps the price down and there are too many options.

go to http://www.avsforum.com to get real advice.  THey have an HDTV Hardware forum and a programming forum you will find a wealth of info in.

thanks videoholic.

When you say that hdtv doesn\'t have a tuner to keep the price down, i understand that part.  But i am curious about what kind of options does she get without a tuner?

I\'m not too sure.  I\'ve never messed with them.  I think it has an analog tuner in it.  FOr like Cable and stuff.  I don\'t know what TV she has so it\'s really hard to tell.  A lot of the HD sets are just monitors.
