Decided to buy a PS2, any do\' and donts??
« on: January 07, 2002, 04:45:40 PM »
I was gonna buy a PS2 back in the summer, but decided to wait and see how the other 2 consoles turned out. Even though im still a big fan of the xbox, i just cant overlook the fact the PS2 is got some great games, and as every month passes they are getting better graphics wise, i think the PS2 turned up the gas to show the xbox what it had in it and they did a good job, especially with GT3 and some others with awesome graphics. Im gonna get the PS2/GT3 package from circuit city in about 2.5 weeks when my taxes get back. Ive heard its not good to leave hte PS2 on for a long period of time, let it go into standby, or play it continously for a long period of time, any of htese hold truth, and are there any other recommendations for care of the system. This is my first system in 2 years, so i wanna make sure its well taken care of..later
Games Ive Owned:

GT3, GTA3, Baldur\'s Gate,
Nascar Thunder 2002

My system has been on standby for months at a time.  The only time I completely turn it off is when I\'m unplugging it to bring out into the living room so my family can watch a DVD.  So that standby thing is just a false rumor.

And me and my brother sometimes play it for days in a row (I\'m practically nocturnal, so I play it at night while he plays it during the day).  It hasn\'t had any problems yet. :)

keep it horizontal.......ther have been problems with it being verticle (circular scratches......etc), take out your cd/dvd after you are done each time....less chance of the laser lens scratching it.

The scratches are caused mainly by leaving a disk in the tray when you turn the PS2 off.  When it powers up again, the laser read head moves into the space where the disk is, and it can sometimes scratch the surface.  Always remove disk before turning off the PS2.

My problems are very limited

I\'ve had 3 game freezes since Oct 26 2000

my system is always in stand by, and the DVD playback has been flawless

Keep it high above ground to avoid excess dust, but don\'t put it so high that when you may accidentally "bump" it, it won\'t shatter into a thousand peices.

Maybe silly, but as one member suggested in these forums, get an old t-shirt and when your down using your PS2 put the old shirt over it.

Works for me and I\'ve never had any PS2 problems for the 4 months that I have had it.

I got mine from Wal-Mart.  If I had it to do over again I\'d get one from EB or Babbages or Software Etc. where they offer an extended warranty.

You\'re going to love GT3.

this is moving towards the Console Debate forums...

And what\'s up with these immature names for the GC? GC ROCKS, X-BOX ROCKS, BUT PS2 ROCKS THE MOST!

Am I the only one who loves all three of these systems?

I have left my system in standby for about a year now (turning it off every once in a while to bring it places of coarse), and I also leave game disks in it all the time when I put it into and out of standby.  Never had any scratches of ANY kind or game freezes.

That being said, time to go own THPS3 :-)
