Learning to drive is frustrating.
« on: January 09, 2002, 05:34:33 PM »
This is kind of frustrating learning how to drive a stick.  But really the shifting is easy, for me it\'s the start and go.  I have to learn to release the clutch, shift in 1st gear, take my foot off the clutch slowly, and then apply some gas. If I don\'t then it dies ugh! But  I might want to learn how to speed shift too but that\'s a secret.;)

WHen we were kids my buddy use to never shift with the clutch.  Of course the car didn\'t last so long.

THen his next car was an automatic.  We use to be driving and he would quickly through it into reverse and back.  Freak.

On my car my emergency break didn\'t work.  It was one that was in the center console.  When people were in the car that didn\'t know, it was hillarious to jerk it up when going 70 down the interstate.

Here\'s the trick:

Learn the clutch\'s sweet spot by releasing it very slowly and use NO gas.  Pick a flat spot and do it over and over.  If your car doesn\'t suck ass, it shouldn\'t be hard to do.  The only reason you need to press on the gas is to get going more quickly, or to start off on an incline.

This method will teach you the skillz without burning up the clutch.

here\'s how I learned it

dump the clutch and  floor the gas, there don\'t have to do it all too slow at first.  :D

Well I just want to know how to do it just incase I feel mean and say to someone, " You want a ride?" then let them get close and pull away.  I find that funny and I might do it to a few "selected" people.;)

EDIT: Posted 1-09-2002 08:14 PM

mm I never thought of that.  Well most likely I probably won\'t do it every single day.  But I can see that happening to me with my "good" luck.

I\'ve never owned a car that wasn\'t a stick.  My first car taught many o\' friend of mine to drive a standard.  And hey, it\'s still alive.

Do what Dolbytone said and practice on a non-inclined surface.  With no gas, lift the clutch very slowly until the car starts to rumble as if it\'s going to die.  THAT\'s when you apply the gas.  Once you\'ve gotten used to it, this also works on inclines with nervous newbie clutchsters.  With your foot on the break, lift the clutch slowly until the car starts to die, then quickly take your foot off the break and apply the gas.

Everyone should learn how to drive a stick at an early age so that when they become pop stars they don\'t rent a Ferrari and burn up the transmission.

I got another tip for Y\'all....

Dolby\'s one step instruction for learning to drive in the snow:  Stick a loose bowling ball in your trunk and try not to let it bang around too much.

Works like a charm folks, trust me.

Automatic Transmission. I\'m 15 and I\'m practicing in my mom\'s car. Luckily, it is automatic.

So, so, simple. :)
