What games influanced the Gaming Industry the most?
« on: January 20, 2002, 01:39:55 PM »
With games evolving every second, everyday, every year, only a few have accomplished the impossible. Offering new water marks in graphical advancements, sound, gameplay, and replay value. What game(s) do you think in your personal preference, set the water mark in these categories and why?

  • Adventure
  • RPG
  • First Person Shooters
  • Fighters
  • Action
  • Sports
  • Racing
  • Simulation
  • Platform
You think positive, I\'ll think realistic.

Adventure - Kings Quest 1. It was the first 3D graphical adventure, and more or less coagulated the basic gameplay formula that most all adventures today use, barring Myst and it\'s clones.

RPG - DragonWarrior 1/Final Fantasy 1. They created the core gameplay standard which would most CRPG\'s would follow on Consoles for years to come.

First Person Shooters - Wolfenstein 3D. Granted, Doom was the better game and far more recognised, but it\'s roots and core came directly from this precursor. If I\'m not mistaken, it was the FIRST true 3D FPS.

Fighters - Street Fighter II. Do I even need to say why?

Action - Not sure.

Sports - No opinion

Racing - Pole Position

Simulation - Not sure, Probably that Chuck Yegar flight sim. Special props go to A10 Tank Killer in my book for being the first Flight Sim to accurately portray the A10\'s usefulness in combat. Most sims which feature the A10 end up portraying it as the weakest of the planes avalable. However, the games engine is set up to accomdate dogfighters.. which the A10 is not... it\'s role is ground support for tanks, infantry, and disabling SAM launchers which endanger high altitude jets.

Platform - Super Mario Bros/Donkey Kong. Either or, Mario still ends up being the foundation cornerstone of the platform market we enjoy today.

* Adventure-Zelda i guess
    * RPG- I don\'t play many RPGs
    * First Person Shooters- Half Life brought the FPS genre to where it is today.  Funny how the formula hasn\'t changed much in 4 years.
    * Fighters- Street Fighter 2 i guess
    * Action- Can\'t put my finger on one
    * Sports- Tony Hawk\'s Pro Skater ushered in a new genre of sports games
    * Racing- GT3 added a new standard for instant replays and driving physics
    * Simulation- Sim City 2000
    * Platform- Super Mario 64 brought many gamers their first experience in true 3D.  It also innovated in camera design and analog control.

Goddamn right I am. Do I really need to pull up that artical from MobyGames again?

Look, it\'s very simple. Adventure games started WAYYY back in the early 70\'s with a game called "Adventure" (Later collossal caves) which was housed on a university mainframe (NOT the C64.) They have evolved into 4 types. Text - Sierra/LucasArts Classic - FMV - Myst Clone. Play any one of those types of adventure and draw conclusive parallels in gameplay to Zelda.. I dare you.

Zelda began with it\'s roots in RPG, and has evolved into an Action/Platformer over time. I don\'t care what some "Modernized" console sites say it is, you cannot buck the truth that is NOT an Adventure game. (Which is why so many people are trying desperately to call the Adventure genre - Interactive Fiction -.. because so many don\'t seem to care to get it right! With the advent of hybrids and "Survival Horror" games, Adventures are becoming back into taste with most gamers.. it\'s simply a marketing ploy to make cheap action oriented games which ride off of the Adventure bandwagon as it gains steam again)

Adventure - Broken Sword (Adventure with great puzzles, thats pure gaming fun)

RPG - FF7 (After this RPG became big....really big!)

First Person Shooters - Doom (It is like the Mario of First person, it can\'t be forgotten)

Fighters - Tekken 3 (Played like the bomb)

Action - Metal Gear Solid (I don\'t think I need to explain)

Sports - Tony Hawk Pro Skater (The original was the best as it showed programmers and designers that after 6 years of PS1 you can still make original games.)

Racing - GT3 (No racing game has been presented with such realism)

Simulation - ??? (Your gues is as good as mine)

Platform - Mario (Old boy, but without this we would probaly not even know what platformers should be like.)
A word of advice:

In the working world there is only two ships that sink: 1.) a Battle ship, and 2.) Partnership

FPS: Quake.
It was the first FPS with REAL gameplay.... and one of the first FPS games with no sprites , it also have some of the best DM levels ever created.

Racing: Gran Turismo.
Made a new standard not only for racing games, but for all videogames.

Platform: Super Mario 64
This is the only platform game I have ever liked.

Action: Resident Evil
I still play this game sometimes :)

RPG: Everquest
Now, THIS is gaming revolution..... noone have ever done something so amazing as Verant :)

Adventure: Shenmue 1 & 2
I have never been so interested in a story line before in a videogame :)

RTS: Starcraft
If you dont agree..... you will be banned :(

Simulator: F355 Challenge
Greatest racing sim ever made.... it is so close to real life driving....

Fighting: Tekken 3
I played this for over 2 years I think..... it is the game I had most into my PS1 ever.
MM told me to have a 5 line signature. I count now
1
2
and 5th line there it is :)

Doom / Quake were two big guns for FPS and more recently Half Life.

Final Fantasy for RPG.

Street Fighter and more recently Virtua Figher for beat em ups.

Sonic and Mario for platformers.

Resident Evil for the survivial horror / story type of adventure.

GT / Ridge Racer for racing.

Graphics: Shenmue

3-D Fighters: Virtua Fighter 2

2-D Fighters: Street Fighter 2
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

I\'ll say Super Mario Bros was a more influential platformer than SM64.  After all, it started sidescrolling and that\'s all over the place.  SM64 didn\'t invent 3D, it just made good use of it.  IMO.

fps: Wolfenstein 3D.
It was the first of "3D" fps found.

Simulation: Elite.
First game with no player on screen and without 3 lifes... and so on. and was actually great game. "I still play it".

RTS: Dune2.
the First rts, and its still better than most of them.

2D Fight:  Exploding Fist.
 ---

Adventure: Kings Quest & Maniac Mansion
2 of the great graphical adventures. "i shame to admit that i wasnt able to start with the text-adventures"

Driving: Pole position
---

rpg: Ultima I
It was the start of western rpg. "well.. kind of after Akalabeth (ultima0)"
