The (Almost) Official Game Music Discussion Thread
« on: January 28, 2002, 11:55:10 AM »
Yes, there are game music discussion boards around the \'net, but I just want to see how many people here are even slightly interested in this often overlooked genre? Do you actually enjoy game music, even to the extent of listening it just for fun?

What is your fave soundtrack, what soundtrack would you recommend for people to listen to, what soundtrack has brought most into a game, or if you\'ve got some good game music links, or what if I just quit asking these silly questions and said that you can post anything about game music here (even just "IT SUCKS BLOATED CHICKEN WATTLE!", of course, it\'s preferred to have an intelligent conversation rather than acting like a moron. Knowing this place, the morons are luckily few and far between :)) and let things roll on their own weight.

Me, I love game music. It\'s my favourite music genre, offering so freakin\' much variety and quality that I couldn\'t be happier (FFX\'s sountrack was a real disappointment.. OK, so I could be happier, bah). Just a while ago, I went nuts over Castlevania/Dracula soundtracks, which rock! I didn\'t remember Super Castlevania IV had so much great music. When I played the game some years back, I remember stopping occasionally to listen to the tunes. Imo, Theme of Simon, Vampire Killer and Clockwork Mansion are definite classics!

------------------

One of the reasons that game music is not very widely popular is that the soundtrack are hard to get. Except if you decide to take a trip to Japan to buy some (most of the game soundtracks come from Japan, if somebody didn\'t know that :p). Of course ordering through the \'net is one option, and if someone\'s interested GameMusic.com, Animenation (they\'ve mixed the Anime and Game music categories together) and Soundtrackcentral are some places where you can try ordering game music from. Videogame Music Archive is worth mentioning here too, as it has one of the most comprehensive collection of videogame MIDis available and not mentioning Gamingforce Audio would be considered a crime (tons of stuff and very popular forums).

I\'ve tried ordering game music from through music stores around Finland, but for some reason, the connections to Japan are so thin that I\'ve only managed to get the Final Fantasy VIII Original Soundtrack (Limited Edition might I add :D) even though I\'ve sent out orders for (almost) hundreds of albums. And it was cheap too! 50% of the price I would\'ve had to pay if I\'d ordered through the \'net, so I think you can understand why I\'ve kept trying. I have also tried ordering a few CD\'s from some \'net stores, but to no avail. I got lucky with Final Fantasy IV Official Soundtrack (USA edition, "Music from FF Chronicles") when I found it in a store that has lots of imported stuff (but no more game music than this one album, aaaaaaarg!), and SmallLady was kind enough to bring me the Final Fantasy IX Original Soundtrack Plus all the way from Japan :)

So I\'ve only got three original albums... er, the rest of my game music collection is in mp3s... evil man I am...

Sure hope this thread ain\'t DoA :p

I dont listen to game music, because it doesn\'t work uless you play the game it came with. Whenever I play a racing game I put on my own trance/techno/progressice music but when I play MGS or RPGs I leave the music on.

as far as my fave soundtrack

MGS1
WipeOut (all)
FIFA 2002 not my fave but has Flight 643 by tiesto in it!!!

some others

FFVIII
Onimusha

How about arranged game music? Have you heard for example, Final Fantasy ~ Symphonic Suite, Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec, R-Type Special or any of the Orchestral Game Concerts? And imo even many original soundtracks do work (not in all cases, for example FFX OST is too ambient to please me) even when not playing alongside a game :)

And racing or sports games normally don\'t have good music... RPG\'s and some specific game series offer the best stuff. And if a "real" band like Prodigy or BSB perform in a game, at least I don\'t consider that to be "game music", only original compositions count.

Sorry to take this thread to a little sidetrack, but does anyone know if there\'s a soundtrack available for the original SSX?  I know they\'re planning an SSX: Tricky soundtrack (click here) but I\'m more interested in the original SSX music.  I got a few partial mp3s from the website, but they are very short.  Thanks.

I\'m not sure if there is an original soundtrack out there to buy (would know if I was wanting one :p), but media-zero.com has somesorta "soundtrack" as MP3s [link], could be the same ones you have already, though...

Er, is posting links to eeevil stuff like MP3s forbidden here? If so, I regrets all my evil doing and will beat myself silly with a large wooden stick.

Well, I\'ve always been a huge fan of the music from the Zelda series. Especially the great atmospheric music in the dungeons of OoT. And of course the Castlevania series, particularly SoTN.

Ghouls and Ghosts has some great music. Along with, Star Craft, Advance Wars, Super Metroid, er....countless rpgs and many other games I happen to own. :p
Er, excuse me, how much for one of those, uh, prophylactics?..........But I don\'t have a dollar and thirty-five cents!

I downloaded a helluva lot of video game music. I\'m putting them on my website (if I ever get started) and have some kickass music.

Thanks for the link Hawke!  That server only seems to run at certain times of the day, and it\'s very sloooowwww, but I\'ve been able to download a couple files.  I believe in my case this is NOT piracy at all.  I PAID EA $50 for my SSX copy, and I\'m sure most of the rest of you did also.  Therefore I\'ve already bought the content, and now I\'m just obtaining it in a different format.  I wonder if these files were actually ripped from the SSX game disk somehow, or if they were digitally recorded from the analog audio outputs on the PS2?

Coredweller:

The track list and band names are at the back of the game manual for the original SSX.  If you want, you can look for them individually on Morpheus.  There\'s a high probability you\'ll find them all.  I found a couple myself.

As for the rest of this thread, I have roughly twenty 650-700 meg cd-r\'s of game music I have collected over the years.  About 60% of that collection was done when I had my measly 56k. :p

A few personal favorites of mine are:

Chrono Trigger
Einhander
Bust a Move (many different mixes)
DDR (many different mixes
Soul Calibur
Ridge Racer Type 4
Final Fantasy 8 Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec
Final Fantasy 6 Grand Finale
Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite
Final Fantasy Pray
Final Fantasy Love Will Grow
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2
Capcom Vs SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium 2001
Super Metroid Sound in Motion

That\'s all I can think of right now...
Don\'t you ever touch my cape.

Quite a collection you have there Ryu, my GM collection would only fill about 12 CDs. I\'ve got all the music on my hard drives now (which are getting a tad too full), and I\'m working on making .txt files that contain as much info on the albums as possible to go with the soundtracks, before I start burning. I\'m also renaming all the tracks so that the collection looks neater and more like a collection rather than a bunch of randomly titled files, quite a job :p

I like way too many soundtrack to go listing them here... I\'m just lazy :D

Fave song of the moment : Theme of Laura, from Silent Hill 2
