PS3 Confirmed to be PS2 Compatible?
« on: January 31, 2002, 12:55:31 PM »
How many knew this was coming?  This is awsome news!!  :D

- by Chris at 9:41 AM - Discuss This Story With Fellow Insiders

In a recent interview for a newspaper Ken Kutaragi "slipped-up" in saying the PlayStation3 would be PS2 compatible. It was enevitable really, but all this PS3 talk shouldn\'t worry you, Sony obviously isn\'t scared of Microsoft\'s "XBOX".

I change the last word in the sentence cuz I got offended.

1) I\'d like to have a link or any kind of confirmation to where as they got this information, "recent newspaper interview" is extremely vague. Not saying it didn\'t happen, I just feel if you someone is going to make a news article about something, they should at least give their source. Once again, god bless \'net journalism.

2) Lets hope Sony improve their backwards compatability this time around.  It is way to shoddy this generation, with games freezing when the options are turned on (see: Silent Hill and many others).

3) I\'m not really surprised though. It gives Sony and developers a way to keep pumping out PS2 games even after its past its prime. Just like they are doing with the Psone now.

PS3 is still far away..... rumours now, at least 1 more year before we are going to see anything at all..... and another year before it will be out in Japan... and another year before we see it here in Europe. So at least 3 more years with PS2... I hoped for 4 or 5 years though

Haven\'t tried it myself but supposedly when you play Silent Hill on fast setting the voices speed up and sound like the chipmunks. This is the first I\'ve heard of it freezing. The number of PS1 problem games running on PS2 ammounts to a handful, less than 1% last time I checked. No big deal and no really noteworthy titles outside of FF Anthology, can\'t save on game VI(III).

I would like to see the actual source as well, although I do remember reading a similar quote by Ken about a year ago. It was along the lines of the plan being to make PS2 games compatible with PS3, leaving behind PS1 altogether. I\'m sure it will hinge on the cost. The idea they\'ve just confirmed it could be  done in software seems reasonable enough.

I wonder if incorporating the past system\'s technologies makes things more or less complicated for developers?

Maybe they could use the extra processing power offered by the PS2 technology in the same box to boost performance even further, not just use it for backwards compatibility. But I bet that\'d make things freakin\' complicated, so let\'s forget that for now :p

I don\'t even wanna be thinking about PS3 yet, PS2 has still so much to offer... whell, back to Burnout, vroom!

Exactly why it would happen. A lot of gamers feel that way. I know I do.

In case you didn\'t know, it was done on PS2 by adding a PSX chip, costing an extra $30 or so at the time. Devs can either ignore it or squeeze it for a little extra juice.

More complicated for the hardware developers, maybe.

Maybe but at the hyped  *cough*100 to *ckoke* 1000 *gasp* times more powerful than PS2 it ain\'t gonna be a big factor. Which is why I think the goal is to try and do it in software to keep initail PS3 production costs as low as possible.

It was defiitely a wise choice for Sony to make the PS2 "backwards compatible". I can\'t imagine Sony not making their next gen system without the same feature, considering that it has brought so many smiles to the consumers faces. I know it may be a stretch to say it, but it makes it look kinda like Sony cares about the little people....
