GTA4 to use Smugglers Run 2 engine?
« on: February 04, 2002, 08:19:50 PM »
I heard that GTA4 is gonna use a step up model of the Smugglers Run 2 engine. Is this true?

If so, it would be really impressive. I mean, SR2 uses really good streaming of textures, and runs pretty much so at around 45fps and the view distance is incredible.

Also, it has the best and most detailed scenery I have ever seen in a game. I mean, there is actual grass in the Vietnam track! No more green textures, actual, no sprites grass and flowers etc!

It looks amazing.

What i heard they were quite happy with renderware. so its quite logical step to continue using it with some modifications, and avoiding the drop to whole new basecode.

SR2 engine is good for huge landscapes.

I don’t think it would work very well in a city.
Look at the small towns that were in SR2.. Not very detailed.

Burnout had very nice graphics (apart from the shimmering which could get a bit annoying).. An updated version of the Burnout engine would fit very nicely :)

Dude, have you played the Vietnam course??? It is hugely detailed. Not with buildings, but with plants and trees and grass!

If you used the SR2 engine in GTA4, made the landscape half the size, you could use the other half of power for details.

Even if you did cut the landscape in half, it would still be utterly MASSIVE.

I can\'t see them changing the whole engine. GTA 3 engine works quite well even if it is slower than a lot of other renderwear games.

I agree with Racer, the landscapes in Smugglers Run 2 are huge, they could modify the engine so it uses half or even a third of the landscape for each city, but the other half (or 2/3) of the polygons would go into making the city buildings etc

Yes.. I have SR2.. The levels are massive and the drawdistance is very impressive..
But................ GTA4 takes place in a CITY, with huge buildings ect..
The SR2 engine is made for massive natural landscapes.. Thats why I think another engine (Updated version of the one used in burnout would be nice..) would fit much better..

The only issue I have with Burnout is that the tracks are not detailed to the extent you would need in GTA4. Coupled with the shimmering, I just don\'t with it would work.

Burnout does not have massive environments. Its basically just a similar sorta thing to GT3 in a sense.

It would need alot of work if it was on an advanced Burnout engine.

The impressive thing to me about SR2 is the frame rate. It is SO MASSIVE, yet it runs at above 45fps, with no slowdown.

GTA3 ran at what, 15fps at best on the PAL version.

I said UPDATED version of the Burnout engine.. They could fix the shimmering problems by adjusting the resolution..

The Burnout engine feels more detailed than the GTA3 one (IMO).. So in a updated version it would fit very well..

SR2 takes place out in the open natural environment.. GTA3 (and 4) takes place in a big city.
I dont think the SR2 engine could make a detailed city environment with pedestrians, AI cars, buildings ect..

Oh and GTA3 ran in about 30fps with some slowdowns..

i actually dont think burnout looked good at all, i also didnt like the game.

i think they should base it on the gta3 engine, just fine tune it a bit more
