Japanese Xbox Pre-orders Update:
« on: February 05, 2002, 01:17:01 PM »
I think Japan will do well.   Link: http://www.xboxgamers.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1012937592,7687,

Amazon.co.jp has informed us that pre-orders are extremely high. The president of Amazon Of Japan said "The demand is very favourable".

These comments are backed up with the Top-100 sales list on Japans leading e-commerce website, Amazon.co.jp:

1 - Special Edition Xbox - Xbox

4 - Dead Or Alive 3 - Xbox

8 - Xbox Memory Unit - Xbox

11 - Genma Onimusha - Xbox

13 - Project Gotham Racing - Xbox

14 - Castle Of Shigimiki - Xbox

30 - Xbox Controller (Black) - Xbox

37 - Bistro Cupid - Xbox

47 - Jet Set Radio Future - Xbox

49 - DVD Playback Kit - Xbox

80 - Silent Hill 2 - Xbox

86 - Nezmix - Xbox

98 - Xbox Power Chord? - Xbox

The Gamecube Console only managed to reach number 40 while its highest title, (Gamecubes main title for 2002) Resident Evil only managed to reach 23rd in the highest sales/pre-orders list.

The PS2 Console does not feature in the Top 100 Sales and Preorders chart but its most preordered title, Onimusha 2 managed to grab the 2nd spot. (2nd to the Xbox Console) While the PS2\'s biggest selling title, Virtua Fighter managed to grab the 17th spot.

This is absolutely fantastic news considering that Japan is thought to be the only teritory that it will struggle it. Its pretty safe to say that the Japanese support will be flowing within weeks.

I\'m astonished.  This is good to see.  This all but cements the survival of the xbox (so long as this isn\'t the absolute end of course).

I hope that this doesn\'t spark fanboys and console zealots to come and throw it in our (by our I mean not me :)) faces (namely xbox fanatics from TBX and IGN).

This is good news indeed if it\'s true (b/c you can\'t be sure until there are actual sale\'s numbers to go by). I personaly thought Xbox barely had a snow ball\'s chance in hell of doing well in Japan.

Online retailer Amazon.com closes their preorder program due to overwhelming demand

According to Amazon.com representatives, Japanese preorders for the Xbox have been officially sold out. As previously reported, Microsoft authorized retailers to begin accepting preorders for their console last weekend in Japan. Amazon.com reportedly sold out of their preorder allotment within hours. Similarly, preorders for software titles including Dead or Alive 3 and peripherals such as the DVD playback kit have been equally strong. Unfortunately, specific preorder totals remain undisclosed. Nevertheless, several retail chains across Japan including Laox and Sofmap reported strong preorders for the Xbox amidst its initial weekend of availability. For reference, the Xbox is scheduled for release on February 22nd in Japan.

Heh, everytime I think of Microsoft trying to make an impact in Japan I keep getting visual flashes of that little comic strip where BillGates dresses up in the Sephiroth outfit and crashes a NGC show. *Gasp!* "Gateseuan!"

This is cool though, as said above it\'s just more competition to drive the market. I still think that the Xbox has a long road ahead of it in Japan, and they will have fight every inch of the way.. but this is definately good news so far.

There is no mention, but there weren\'t any hard and fast numbers over here either.  You can bet that there is about the same number of launch units there are there was here (give or take).

2-22-02 is the JP launch date.

Hmm... No bundle?  Odd.  I know I had to get a bundle.  Another strange factoid, software numbers are not comparing so well with the hardware numbers in the sense of the position among the top-selling items, but in any case, the x-box\'s only sale competition is onimusha 2 pre0orders, FFX international (which was released after this information was released) and of course GT3 concept, which is in 3rd.  By the way, why is an American site being asked about the X-Box\'s pre-order numbers?  Wouldn\'t it be more feasable to go to stores and check there?  Aren\'t the stores the ones with the big deals?

Well, whatever.  First day of pre-orders, who expected it not to rope in its fair share of people who all have to own every console?  I know I\'d be ordering too if I had the cash simply because it\'s a "Special edition" which sells like crazy in Japan. (GT3 concept anyone?)  Well, as was said, it\'s a 5 year marathon, not a quick sprint.  We\'ll see how these numbers hold up over time.  Even the DC sold out it\'s first day of release in Japan and look where it is now.
Don\'t you ever touch my cape.
