Microsoft\'s Xbox division president Robert Bach recently spoke with members of the Japanese press in preparation for the console\'s launch on February 22nd. To begin, he was asked about the performance of the Xbox in America since its launch last November. In response, Mr. Bach said, \'I\'m often asked why Microsoft decided to enter the console gaming market. It\'s because the world has gone through a digital entertainment revolution in recent years. Console games provide an interactive medium to explore that revolution. As for the Xbox\'s performance in America, more than 1.5 million units have been sold since launch.\'

Continuing, Mr. Bach was asked about the online network and possible competition from Nintendo and Sony in the Japanese market. Responding, Mr. Bach said, \'I think the GameCube will mainly appeal to players 12-14 years old and younger. In order to understand our online vision for the Xbox, you have to think 3-4 years in the future. We believe the Xbox will be the driving force behind the spread of broadband services in Japan. PlayStation 2 owners will need to add hard-drive and Ethernet peripherals in order to transform the console into an online platform. We\'re committed to making the Xbox the leading console in Japan.\' Mr. Bach went on to say that Microsoft plans to open an Asian manufacturing facility in order to meet Xbox demand in the region. Currently, all Xbox units are manufactured though plants in Mexico and Hungary.

Lastly, he was asked about Microsoft\'s strategy for the Japanese market. Mr. Bach replied, \'We believe there are four main things to consider in order to be successful. First, the highest quality games are needed. In order to achieve that, we\'ve partnered with dozens of software developers around the world. Since preferences vary from market to market, we\'ve aligned ourselves with leaders in every geographic region to provide the best software for our players.

   Secondly, we\'ve partnered with retailers to ensure a steady flow of hardware and software to consumers. Twelve games are scheduled for release at launch, compared with three for the GameCube and ten for the PlayStation 2. By this spring, more than thirty Xbox titles will be available on Japanese shelves. Early preorder data we\'ve received shows significant demand for the Xbox. The last two points to consider are innovation and brand power. From a technical standpoint, the Xbox is built with the future in mind - hard-drive, Ethernet, and 5.1 channel audio capabilities are included.

 As for building a brand, we believe players will associate \'Xbox\' with cutting edge entertainment, similar to Microsoft\'s \'Windows\' and \'Office\' brands in the PC market.\' In conclusion, Mr. Bach reiterated that Microsoft expects to meet global Xbox shipment projections of 5-6 million units by June 2002.

Without commenting on anything else (besides that it is my opinion that the Xbox will not do well in Japan), I have to ask myself whether or not Mr. Bach actually believes what he said.  I don\'t associate anything of Microsoft with "cutting edge", good, stable, or worth it.  The only problem is they\'re the only reasonable choice most of the time, because of their huge buy-out budget.

Xbox will do well in Japan IMO

and I\'m sure Mr. Bacjh does believe it cause 100\'s of millions of people use MS products worldwide

say what you want but the real picture is painted quite differently

most of those 100\'s of millions dont know better and dont have a choice to have their products

MS kills the competition by buying them out and taking their ideas so to speak

but that doesnt mean Xbox is bad or anything but this time no one is making you buy an xbox if you want a gaming console

unlike windows where you buy a pc its got it already on there
