Drakan: The ancients gates
« on: February 07, 2002, 05:34:39 AM »
I got Draken 2 days ago and I am simply blown away by this wonderful game.

The first thing I noticed was the awesome sound. You will hear a big difference when Rynn is walking on grass, brick or dirt.  I love the sound that the dagger makes when shes pulls it out.

The second thing is the levels are huge, theirs not even levels per say.  Its like a whole world.  After going to Surdana (the first town) I went exploring and found a cave full of enemies and I was in there nearly two hours exploring the cave to see what I would find.  Its not like I toke my time either, I killed the enemies picked up the gold and moved on.

The controls are very nicely done, with lock on ability, Hotspot weapon change, and strafing.  I play the game for a day and half before I looked at the manual (which explains things very well) only to find out that their are combos to do certain attacks with a sword and other weapons.  Theres even backflips and climbing al la Tomb Raider.

The similaritys to Tomb Raider are endless.  Its Tomb Raider 1400 years ago!! Rynn must be Laras Great, great, great (well you get it) Grandmother.  The character is modeled closely to Lara, right down to the swinging pony tail.  Rynn climbs, backflips and has lock on like Lara, but has ahort hand to hand weapons and a bow for long distances.  (this part can be done in sniper mode too. (zoomed in)

Theres also lots of side quests to keep you busy.  (or just go exploring, just be sure to check out the cave/nest before going to far.)

Like I said before this game is incrediable, by far my favorite game and I have ...

MGS2 (10)
FFX (10)
Grand Theft Auto 3 (9.6)
Gran Turismo 3 A-spec (9)
Splashdown (8.5)
ATV offroad Fury (8.9)
Madden 2002 (8.2)
NHl 2002 (8.5)
NCAA 2002 (7.8)
Gradius 3 and 4 (6) its a classic though

I think you\'ll agree thats a good list of games.

My only complaints are theres only shadows on Rynn, and the battles could get old with only a few combos to do.  (but then again Zelda never got old did it!)

I give this game a 9.8 out of 10

While its not perfect its damn close.

Ask me any questions you may have, I would be glad to talk Drakan

Well I think your score is too generous but I agree its a game that is being overlooked by alot of people because it features a woman hero and its not hyped

but the graphics are great. Not the best but close to tops on the PS2

slight framerate dips and stutters but not to shabby.

Controls are different and take a little while getting use to, but they do function nicely and as you get better they become easier.

Magic is handled differntly in Drakan then most other RPG\'s and action adventure games. Seems frustrating in the beginning but its getting beter now that I\'m understanding how the system can work for me

Not to big of a fan of the way the game does not pause when you go into inventory

Storyline voice acting so far is quite enjoyable,

I think the game deserves high 8\'s low 9\'s. but I still have quite a bit to go

more people should be giving Drakan a try

I respect your opinion, I do agree about the inventory not pausing to a point.

The reason I like it is it forces you to prepare for anything, and with the theme music going it really pulls you into the game.

Besides I don\'t think you should have the ability to stop the world and take your time to pick a different weapon or potion.  Surreal then went so far as to add the hotspot feature to make it more playable to others that didn\'t like the inventory not pausing.

The game is cool

its better then BG:DA much less linear.

Drakans world is huge and most of the fun can be had in just discovering new caves and stuff

I concur with JP.  I rented it and actually tried to give it a fair shake.  I played it for 4-5 hrs and was just continually bored the whole time.  I preferred BG : DA much over this game.  Just depends on what you like I suppose.  I normally agree with everything ddaryl writes on his feelings about games, but with this one we are definitely different.  I would buy it off the reduced price rack for 20 bucks but I wouldnt spend any more on it.

There is nothing boring at all about Drakan.

The more I play it the more I love the game

graphics are very underrated. In fact this game has some ofd the coolest graphics on the PS2 EASILY. Those mountins are right out of story book, and you probably never made it to the sno levels  which look fantastic.
Rynn and Arokh are very nicely done and animated

and if you just wander around any area you will find caves and sidequests

I had to restart my game do to a memory card glitch and I decided I\'d wait awhoile befor edoing the 1st real main quest that was 4 hours ago and I\'m still finding cool caves and items

the combat is pretty cool for an RPG. I having some pretty intense battles that require equall amounts of stategy, offensive and dodge tactics

and I\'ve yet to ride Arokh in my new game this is all on foot.

Drakan is one of my favorite videogame, and is severly under appreciated by people to quick to write it off.

Drakan is much better then BG: DA. BG: DA was way way more linear and more repetitive then Drakan

Drakan beats BG: DA in every category including graphics thanks to Drakans controllable camera

Oh, I just thought it was sorta humourous that he said toke trying to say took. Toke as in say toking it up, toking on a bong or something of that sort. Stupid thing to laugh at, I know but I just couldn\'t help my self when I saw that.

Are you sure yu got all the necessary items

I passed that part last night, and as soon as I got the last item Rynn told mne I had to head back to Zeggoro\'s place and give him the items

and as soon as I got to Zeggoro\'s place it automatically went to a cutscene
