1080i or progressive on PS2: real or BS?
« on: February 09, 2002, 05:26:00 PM »
I got this from a Home Theater board:

Quote
An excerpt from PSM magazine\'s preview of Sled Storm:

"1080i support for HDTV owner is planned as well, making it one of the first PS2 games on record to feature progressive scan output."

I would be excited if this really happened (and truly hope it does), but 1080i and progressive are 2 different things.  Either this guy got mixed up in his statement or he just has no idea what he\'s talking about.

If they do get HD resolutions out of the PS2 I\'ll be one happy camper.  They got in-game DTS out of it (albeit it needs a lot of work), this machine could have a longer lifespan if they keep finding innovative ways to keep up with the latest sound & display formats.

Can anyone that gets PSM Mag confirm the quote?

Isnt this more so to do with software then hardware? I was under the impression that the PS2 could indeed do HDTV res, it was just more so dependant on software implementation rather then hardware.

I mean, PS2 is component cable ready, so wouldn\'t it just need to be implemented into the software?

I may be wrong, but this is what I thought.

Also, isnt the highest res PS2 can do 1024x798 or something??? Thats whats on PS2 JAP website in the specs section.

The ps2\'s chip maximum resolution is 1280 x 1024 @ 60hz progressively.  Twice the speed of hdtv but that\'s only for full screen tv.  So, one of my dream is to see it in 1280 x 720p @ 60hz.  I really hope to see 720p widescreen videogames in action on ps2.  But because ps2 doesn\'t have enough video RAM and the multi output is 480i, its seem to be a pain in the A$$ to do it.  Even if somebody have RGB Scart or component cable, it will still be view in 480i doesn\'t matter if the game could possible runs in higher resolution.  Sony wants to make ps2 a/v output backward compatible with psOne, that\'s why it maximum output is still only 480i, i guess.

I heard that when Square first work with ps2, their first game, FFX was to be in High Definiton.  But they couldn\'t do it because of the VRAM limitation.
