State of Emergency Impressions (post them here)
« on: February 16, 2002, 03:42:20 AM »
I\'ll start off with my impressions and you people can add, agree, disagree, or write up your own impressions as you see fit.

State of Emergency

When you start up SoE, you are given two different option modes called Chaos and Revolution.  Both modes differ greatly from eachother, but the modes have their ups and downs.

First of all, in Revolution mode, you are given the option of two different characters, a tough hawaiian shirt wearing male lead, and a skirt wearing tough female lead.  Both characters Have different attributes making them good or bad depending on what kind of player you are.  The female is faster yet weaker and the male is stronger yet slower.  All characters get the same sets of weapons regardless of their attributes.

After selecting your character, you are thrust into the first level of the game, the shopping mall.  Here, a riot is already in progress and you start off by meeting up with a contact to prove your worthiness to the Freedom Fighter faction.  Afterwards, several missions get layed out to you one after the other that are completed by following an arrow to a point and either collecting, killing, escorting, guarding, or destroying that particular area, item or person.  90% of the missions are divided up into these categories and it can get easily repetetive especially since the weapon placement is quite weak and unvaried in the beginning and tends to get quite boring.

However, in Chaos mode, the beauty of the game awaits.  Here, players can run amok everywhere and anywhere dropping a piece of veritable Hell on the evil corporation.  All the weapons in the game are placed here and boy are they a joy to use.  The flamethrower, or what I call, the crowd calmer, is by far my favorite weapon.  The rocket launcher and M-16 assault rifle is also a beautiful thing to behold.  And nothing comes quite close to blowing your enemies heads off with a close up shotgun blast.

Gaining points in Chaos mode unlocks new areas and new characters allowing you to advance in the mode and choose the portion of the city you wish to fight in.  This mode is times and has several other sub modes present in it, but the options are never lacking and a lot of the fun comes from just blowing the crap out of everything in site.

The few gripes that I have with the game are these:

  • Poor Camera Control - It\'s too bad that such an exilerating game is ruined by something that by now, should have been mastered.  How hard is it really to implement a full range of motion with the camera?  A simple \'180\' turn move or a \'rear view\' mode would have done wonders with this game.
  • Graphics - There is a hint of slowdown in some spots, but for the most part, it\'s quite brisk framerate wise.  The problem with the graphics, for me at least, lies in the colorful cartoony style.  I don\'t think that is particularly involving in a game depicting riots.
  • Poor AI - Although the people react to your actions in real time, they mostly run around like headless chickens.  All those rumors of police brutality and civilian beatings are purely false.  For the most part, cops are about as oblivious to the riots as a tree.  People get stuck on stairs and esclators and it\'s just frustrating wading through them to get there.
All in all, the game is quite refreshing.  I\'m sure NOW will be up in arms over this one, but overall, it\'s a very entertaining game.  The Revolution mode may become repetetive fast, but the Chaos mode will keep you hooked for hours on end.  I know I\'m hooked on it.  Pure mindless explosive.  I love what I have played so far.

PS, sorry for the poor writing style, but it\'s 3.43AM and I need more SoE!
Don\'t you ever touch my cape.

I got it yesterday and am taking it back today :(

It is boring as hell. It does not have the depth or the overall game quality of GTA3.
It really is just running around and hitting/clubbing, or shooting people. It\'s really dumb. The people are just running around like chickens. It gets really old, they are just running, and running, and running, over and over and over. Where the hell are they going? And where are they coming from? And WHY are they there. At least in GTA3 you could pick someone off walking down the street (it was just more personal :) ). But these people are just like the person said above, like chickens. It gets REAL old REAL FAST. And the missions are lame. It\'s the same ol thing over and over. STop this person, guard this person, take this here, blow this up. I just cannot stand to play this game anymore.
It totally gives me a headache with all those mindless people running around. I actually had to take some Advil after the first hour of playing it.
And I don\'t have anything against hack and slash games, in fact I usually like them. I LOVE baulders gate and It\'s hack and slash, but it\'s not as mindless and stupid as this game.
The graphics are not all that great, it is not smooth at all. And when you are playing it you are thinking why bother.
Do yourself a HUGE favor and rent this thing before you go to buy it (unlike me). But at least I can exchange mine up to 14 days.
GTA3 just blows this game away. And even if there were no GTA3 to compair this to, it would still suck.
If you have any other questions about it feel free to ask me.
I know some people will be mad about this game sucking, but that does not change the fact that it blows. I really wanted to like this game too, I am also bummed about it.

Thats all I have to say about that.

Truthfully I was expecting more because of what I read...but the space you have to destroy in the mall is f*cking little...it\'s not big hell GTAIII\'s Portland Harbor is bigger than that.  Not good for some big distruction.  Yes the people on screen are just like what Ryu said chicken with their heads cut off...the violence is okay but GTA had more there except for the hatchet and sword.  It\'s still fun to play though.

There goes your credibility.  Why are you comparing a game that is a crime syndicate simulator toa  beat \'em up?  Did you not read what I said?  The games are totaly different.  What, do you think because it\'s made by Rockstar that it should be compared to GTA3?  They do make other types of games you know.  It\'s like me comparing the Bouncer to Final Fantasy simply because Squaresoft is more known for Final Fantasy..

Another GTA3 comparison?  Not liking the people is one thing, but remember, this is a riot.  Where are the people going in GTA3?  People are just walking down the streets in the middile of a gang war moseying along minding their own business?  Gunshots and death dont bother them?  Please, this game is a totaly different mindset.  These people are running and taking everything not bolted down, just imagine where they could go and maybe you\'ll feel better.

Baldurs Gate a hack-n-slash?  I think you over estimated what SoE was going to be and underestimate what Baldur\'s Gate really is.

But your only complaints have been just that, comparisons...

Good thing.  I couldn\'t listen to another word from you.

THere goes your credibility as well, as if there was much left from off-topic.  Another GTA3 comparison, what is wrong with you people?  And you can advance to places other then the mall, you know that don\'t you?  *Sigh* Some people just don\'t get it.

I\'ll take that block war starting rocket launcher and the flame thrower in SoE then any other gun in GTA3, but it\'s a moot point.  The games are designed with different intentions.

Heh.  Nothing like people critcizing games before playing them. :)  At least you didn\'t compare it to GTA3 though.

well all I said was that it looked really boring and I\'ve heard a lot of people say that it is true. Please don\'t put words in my mouth I didn\'t knock it, I just told you what I\'ve seen and heard from others.

Nope, they didn\'t mention GTA3 at all. They just said they were very disappointed with it coz it was so repetitive.

Is it really worth picking this one up, I only have enough to get VF4 or this, and well, VF4 looks more appealing, and prolly has more depth:confused:

Edit: Is it as shallow as the IGN review says it is?
