Heres some updates: :)

February 18 Announcement

The hard disk drive unit for PS2 and precedence sale are ended.
On a FF XI beta tester, sale is started from February 22.

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI) It was announced that the external type and the built-in type completed precedence sale of " hard disk drive unit only for PlayStation 2" which was being performed from July, 2001.

The hard disk drive unit for PS2 is the authentication system of the network service which SCEI performs. (DNA-S) Precedence sale was carried out for verification, such as network connection of a user and a load experiment. Moreover, sale of a hard disk correspondence game is started from July, and the user who wants to play a little before flew at precedence sale. The number of first time shipment is 10,000 sets, and its remarkable thing become insufficient is also fresh in memory.

beta test of "Final Fantasy XI" started from December could not be played, either, in order that it might not have a hard disk drive unit, although software arrived, but it poured in the hard disk drive unit, and had changed into the quite severe state. This is considered to have extracted the number of precedence sale in order to sell a hard disk drive unit to each ISP company with the network service formal start from spring.

At Playstation.com.com which was performing precedence sale monopolistically, it is supposed that hardware is offered together with a network service from now on from each ISP. Moreover, about the user of the "Final Fantasy XI beta tester", it is said that sale of a hard disk drive unit is started from February 22.

WOW! this looks sweet!

that is sweet, it even comes with the network adapter, cool!  but how big is it(in GB)?  will it improve loading times?  will i be able to save games on it?  got any more info?  it sounds cool, but if its more than $100 i am not even going to consider it.

well all i can think of is to save games, 40 gig seems a little excessive to me or to copy the games to. Now this also strikes me as pointless especially if it doesn\'t improve loading times.

There are lots of rumors and ideas for what the PS2 HDD is going to be used for.  Remember that Sony said they wanted the PS2 to be the center of the living room; an all-in-one entertainment machine.  Some things that I have heard are downloadable music, downloadable games (as an alternitive to renting games), and even a digital TV recording device (40 gigs!  That\'s a lot of TV! :)).  But most importantly is how it\'s going to be used in the games, and as of right now, the only thing official is just increased load times in some games.  But I would be surprised if they didn\'t allow you to record your CDs or download MP3s and put it in some of the games you were playing.  There will probably be tons of other uses for it too, all depending on what the developers do with it.

hmmmmmm I was under the impression that the HD for the Xbox makes games load faster.  I hear it spinning when Halo is loading up and it\'s not as long as a PC game on my comp which has better specs than the Xbox.

I don\'t think it was just a gimmick, especially since I didn\'t have to pay extra for it like I will with the PS2\'s HD.
