Sore loser Koreans
« on: February 21, 2002, 11:16:46 AM »
First the Korean short track speed skating team takes down Apolo Anton Ohno on the 1,000 meter event, sabotaging what would have been a gold medal performance.

Then the same Korean skater who took out four competitors on Saturday, crashes again in the 1,500 meter even last night, taking one French skater down with him.

Finally, the leading Korean skater in the final lap of the 1,500 meter event (Kim Dong-sung) decides that the only way to retain his position is to illegaly drift over and cut off Ohno on the final straightaway.  He\'s rightfully disqualified.

Now it\'s revealed that Korean hackers have been busy spamming the USOC mail servers with threats against Ohno: (http://sports.yahoo.com/oly/short_track_skating/news/ap/20020221/ap-ohno-threatssho.html)

So Korea is all worked up about this now:  "It is outrageous and unbelievable. The disqualification is a reflection of America\'s distorted patriotism after the September 11 plane attacks in the U.S.," said Sohn Joo-suk, 30-year-old employee at Daishin Securities.

This is what I call SORE LOSERISM!  I can\'t stand it when some country decides they are the rulers of some particular athletic event, and therefore if they\'re ever bested, then it must be a conspiracy, or favoritism, or cheating of some sort.  It couldn\'t be because there\'s someone out there better than them.  Oh, no it couldn\'t be that!

Ahh, the Olympics, how we love thee :) Personally, I thought the South Korean got rigged. I thought that Ohno did get beat, and that the Korean made a good move in keeping his position. Ohno got gold, and that\'s great. But he got beat, and the reason that he GOT beat is because he decided to hang out in 5th place until the 3rd to last lap, so basically, it\'s his own fault.

What do Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Matt Clement, and Carlos Zambrano have in common?

They\'re the pieces to the next great pitching rotation of our time, what else?

Hey, that stuff may work in other kinds of racing events, but it\'s against the rules in short track.  Plain and simple.  You can\'t screen somebody out intentionally.  Ohno was hanging back throughout the race to conserve energy, just so he\'d have the power pass Kim on the last lap.  All part of the plan.  It may look wrong but those skaters know the rules.

Yeah, that Korean sucked.  I mean anyone could win if you jump ahead and weave back and forth real fast.  Better yet why don\'t they take one skate off and try to use it as a weapon.

That event keeps my stomach in knots the whole time.  Not only with I hope they don\'t wreck, but can he get past the dude.

Yeah, but usually when those guys "hang back" it\'s in 3rd or so, but not 2nd to last...oh well. He did have a hell of a pass to go from 5th to 2nd in one turn, that was great.

Yea, this whole Olympics is screwed up. It was bad enought when the canadians didn\'t win the gold straight off in the figure skating even. I mean, everyone knows they had a perfect preformance and rightfully diserved the gold.  I want to know who\'s idea it was to give away two medals away in the first place.

Not that I\'m not happy that Ohno won, but really... the Korean skater was better, or at least had a better strategy in this race.  I don\'t think Ohno wrongfully got the gold, but unfortunately, if he hadn\'t been like.. illegally pushed/shoved/checked/whatever it is he wouldn\'t have gotten gold, prolly.  Anyway, go USA.

I saw that, and a jillion replays of it.  The first time, it looked like Apollo got beat cuz he was too far back, but then they showed the replay from a different angle and explained the rule, and it was incredibly obvious that the Korean cheated.  Like  Coredweller said, they know the rules.  He knew Apollo was fast enough to pass him, and he\'s got no honor, so he shoved his ass in the way.  Stupid ass woulda gotten a silver, but he chose nothing.  He wouldn\'t have gotten gold if he\'s played fair, either.  Apollo was burning him, about to pass.  If the Korean were really faster, he woulda sprinted his ass off (which they both probably were anyway), and stayed ahead.  But he couldn\'t.  As for being in 5th, well, not a good idea, but he never got a good chance to pass.  I really doubt that the top short track skater in the world (controversies or not, he was at least the favorite) would sit there depending on a 3-person pass in the last couple laps (and then another pass after that).  Maybe he didn\'t want to get back in 5th at all, but someone made it by.  That happens, though, and what matters is that he was able to get back in front.
I\'ll think of a sig later.

You know, I\'m really sure the South Korean was thinking of Honor as he moved in front of someone trying to skate past him. Something tells me this Korean\'s goona be back come Saturday, and he\'s goona be out for some blood...barring that, some medal action. Oh yeah, missed ya Crazy, ever since you ditched AIM for some reason, haven\'t talked to you since the CC\'s went down...been a long time :)
