I had originaly estimated 100,000 at launch..
however i\'m not sure it will make that target

all the japaneese websites and people were crazy over the SPECIAL EDITION xbox.. however.. if there are still some on the shelf and they made only 20k.. then I guess more around 60k-70k xboxes sold

*sigh*

Yes... no customers in sight.  And sadly enough, those boxes on display were all empty boxes.  Its a wonder customers didn\'t rush in to purchase empty Xbox boxes... what a shame.

Notice how the boxes on the top say "SAMPLE". They were all empty boxes.  Sad, isn\'t it?  Mid-day and all the empty SAMPLE boxes are still on the floor not being sold.

yeah right, they\'re gonna have over 50 "sample" boxes on the sales floor

granted two of them say sample, but that doesnt even necessarrily mean theyre empty.  they also look like theyre on a different pile

the xbox launch wasnt even a 1/5th of what the PS2 launch was TWO YEARS AGO, so no point in trying to defend it

You know what\'s really funny?  The quotes from the people who are actually there and said that they could walk in off the streets and buy an Xbox, especially since only 250,000 were produced for their launch weekend.  If they can\'t sell 250,000 consoles on launch day to the most hardcore Japanese tech heads, then I don\'t know what American company can.  Besides that, the PS2 sold 1 million consoles in 48 hours, MS didn\'t even touch those numbers.

-  On a side note, if you are going to be such a total jackass and attempt to dissprove something, you might as well try to dissprove the entire post, particularly the quotes which are the most important aspect of my reply.  Instead, you focused on one picture, one picture of SEVERAL on IGNInsider depicting street outlets and stores with tons of Xboxes in stock.  I don\'t see why street outlets would need so MANY sample boxes especially with the space they have to work with which is no bigger then my bedroom.

This is Japan my friend.  They have no time to BS their customers with box displays like here in America.  They\'d rather be moving product then wowing customers with how much stock they have on their hands.
Don\'t you ever touch my cape.

I think it will be a matter of time before the Xbox and GCN start to sell better...Right now PS2 is locked in everyone\'s mind as the console of choice (in japan anyway) because of the crazy amount and genre of software available.  Japan is a totally different market then the US and I don\'t think MS could have prepared for it in the time alloted.  It\'s going to take a major gaming force (Enix, Square for example)  to make them open their eyes to anything else but PS2.

Compared, Xbox and GCN have no where near what PS2 does in terms of software.  Once PS2 starts to show it\'s age a little more (it\'s beginning to) then people will undoubtedly move on...I\'m guessing by the end of the year PS2 will "peak" if it hasn\'t already...

I fear Europe won\'t be much different.  What with the high price and all...:(

It\'s not like MS is totally in the dumps...the US is an entirely different story...:D

This is just speculation, treat it as such...

Why is that funny?  I think it\'s horrible that Japan can\'t see past PS2...I think it will only be a matter of time.

PS2 also had a very well received previous console...

Did anyone really expect MS to outdo the PS2 launch numbers in Japan?  I didn\'t...there\'s nothing appealing to them in the launch lineup.

It will take Panzer Dragoon, Project Ego, and such to catch their true attention...

Same goes for GC,  I think GC sales will see a sharp uprise when MarioSunshine and games of that caliber are released...

I expected it to sell 150k..
it did not even do that (yes, I know i\'m estimating.. but i\'ve researched the topic)

All the games you have listed don\'t come out for a long time.. how long do you expect it to stay alive in japan without software the japaneese want?

JSRF and Project Gouthem Racing failed to sell 10k.. if those games nobody wants, how will it survive?

Read that first line again and see if you can spot the perverted message.

Wonder if that was purposely done...
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

For a U.S.A system 123,000 is not too bad.  :D

I don\'t know how to answer that.  This discussion is pointless in SO MANY WAYS.

I don\'t believe anybody is under the presumption that Xbox launch is going to rival PS2\'s launch.  When the PS2 came out, it was the only console out at the time, and Japanese by in large did not have DVD players.  They bought them in droves not only for the fact that it was the latest, but mainly b/c it also had a DVD player built in.

Xbox doesn\'t have that luxury.

Those who are naysayers about the Xbox\'s success really have to ask yourself, "WHY". Is it because you hate Microsoft, the giant evil? Is it because you are such fanboys that you wish to marry Sony since they last raped you with the exorbant price of their televisions and video equipment.

Alas, how we have deviated from the quest of good gaming and intead resort to how to chide a console\'s success because we feel its success will ruin the world.

The launch wasn\'t spectacular... but it wasn\'t AS bad as some people put it.  No ghost town, to say the least.
