Is bowling a sport?
« on: February 28, 2002, 02:09:03 PM »
Lately my chums & I have been going bowling. A lot. So much so that I bought a ball, shoes, etc...

So, is this a sport or is it a hobby? I would like to think that it\'s a sport you can do while drinking.

BTW, if anyone\'s ever seen the movie "Buffalo \'66" (vincent gallo, christina ricci) we bowl at the same alley that\'s in the movie. That\'s right, ddaryl- Voelker\'s!)

In fact, I\'m goin\' there right now. Cheers!

While I suppose it is a sport, I don\'t agree with it, for instance, being an olympic sport.

Olympians, and athletes in general should be fit people, but we\'re gonna be seeing 250 pound men with huge arms winning gold medals once bowling hits the olympics.

Almost anything competetive, organized, and physical in nature can probably be considered a sport, but I believe that one requirement for sports should be athletecism (sp?).

I disagree with that concept.  I would consider bowling a sport.  To me, a sport doesn\'t require athleticism, but rather some sort of physical skill.  Bowling does require physical skill in order to direct the ball to the right point with the right amount of speed and spin.  Besides, what makes rolling a heavy ball with accuracy any less of a sport than say throwing a heavy ball a distance (as in shotput).

Oh, and if you don\'t want to have 250 pound men with huge arms winning golds, you might want to get rid of things like weight lifting, shotput, wrestling, and numerous other sports.

i would say it\'s a hobby much like pool, darts, and shuffle board.  If you considersomething a sport because it requires a skill, then chess would be a sport, so would watermelon seed spitting, and so on.  In addition golf is not a sport in my mind. (but this is coming from someone who is a complete jock, so i might be a bit close minded to wussy sports)

If they allow golf to be called a sport, then I don\'t see any reason bowling wouldn\'t be considered a sport.

I guess the difference between sport and hobby is in the eye of the beholder.

Yea, I\'d defintaly say it\'s a sport.  Anything that requires u to sweat, even a little bit should be seen as a sport.  Or anything that requires u to toss 10 pound balls for that matter

Just like ppl trying to shoot down golf as a sport.  Golf takes precision, and swinging that club after awile does get tiring, trust me on that.

I didn\'t just say skill, I said physical skill.  That\'s the difference.

From dictionary.com

Sport - Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

Physical, rules, and competitive.  There ya go.

Dear God, please let there not be members (pardon the pun) on this board that take part in competitive masturbation.

Bowling IS a sport, pool IS a sport.
yes its true.. at least in my eyes, as i am an avid pool player and bowler. and it does require a good amount of skill for both, its not just physical skill, but mental skill as well. just because it doesnt involve running or getting in shape for, it is a sport which involves much practice and time put into it to be good at. this doesnt mean you have to come up with stupid **** and ask if its a sport just because it has common characteristics for why its a sport.. i mean use common sense.  hell they play this on ESPN, and last time i checked... it was a sports station. i mean it couldve turned into the home of competitve masturbation over the last couple of days, but im sure it didnt.. cuz i havnt got the call yet.
C-A-P-S CAPS! CAPS! CAPS!  wait.. they suck this year.  but at least we got Jagr, haha.. wait he sucks too.. damn! :rpissed:
