OK, here\'s the deal. I\'m putting this up for discussion about the flopbox:
According to the latest numbers in North America, are about 1.65 million Xboxes and 1.3 to 1.4 million GameCubes. So, Microsoft is clearly ahead on the home front. But that\'s not what I see as the biggest problem facing MS.
Let\'s take a closer look at that Xbox number. If I\'m not mistaken, didn\'t MS sell 1.5 million of those Xboxes by year end 2001? If that\'s the case, then in the first 2 months of 2002, they have only sold 150,000 more. That\'s an average of only 18,500 per week.
Now Japan. They launched with 250,000 and sold 123,000 over the launch weekend with some saying it looks bad to only sell half of their low launch allotment. Others say give them a chance, they did better than expected.
Now Europe. They launch on March 14 with 1.5 million consoles for them. The word out of Europe is that the Xbox is too expensive at 60% more than the PS2 and double the Gamecube when it comes out in May. Granted, there are many Xbox fans in Europe and it will do a lot better than in Japan. However, it\'s no longer Christmas in Europe. Sony releases MGS2 in a week in Europe with FF X about a week after the Xbox launch. Sony also just slashed prices on it\'s greatest hits games as well.
So, here are the questions:
How can MS sell 1.5 million consoles at launch in Europe when it took 6 weeks to do that in their own home park and during the Christmas season?
If they sell only half or less of the 1.5 million at launch, won\'t people say they look like bigger fools than the launch in Japan? In other words, are expectations getting too high for Europe?
And, MS has projected that they expect to sell 6 million consoles world wide by end of June. Well folks, today they have sold less than 1.8 million so far in NA and Japan. That gives them only 4 months to sell 4.2 million more to reach their goal. That\'s more than a million a month. Sony doesn\'t sell anywhere near a million a month now and is always outselling the Xbox. It outsold the Xbox during it\'s launch in North America even and probably will outsell it during it\'s launch in Europe as well.
How is MS going to ever reach it\'s target of 6 million by end of June?
