The Best Sleeper Hit Ever?
« on: March 03, 2002, 09:16:47 PM »
OK, I had an extra 50 bucks in my pocket so I headed over to my local Software Ect to buy a game. I already had all the killer apps for the PS2 so I didn\'t know what to buy. Burnout caught my eye with it\'s explosive cover, so I decided to check it out.

I poped it into my PS2 and I was pretty let down by the graphics. It had some really bad jaggie problems and flickering. I spent a couple of mintues with it and boy was it a blast! I learned gameplay IS a lot more important than graphics. The amount of excitment in this game is amazing, dodgeing traffic and racing is a perfect mix. Not to mention the music is just as energy pumping as you would expect. This game really reminds me of Ridge Racer 4, Gran Turismo and Crazy Taxi all rolled into one, what a combination! After playing it for a while I noticed the graphics weren\'t so bad, the textures were all very sharp and the cars had a really nice shine effect to them. The whole experience was just phenominal. Have any of you guys played it?

By the way you guys should post all of your favorite sleeper hits here, that would be great.
Mine are a tie between Burnout and ICO!
Man.. if BookerT lit a fart during a Spinner-oony.. it truely would be the most electrifying move ever..

I reckon ICO is gonna be a sleeper hit.

But my favourite was Porsche Challenge and Rapid Racer on PSOne.

Damn those two games were fun.

Burnout is the best racing game I\'ve played. At least the most thrilling one. It just feels soooo right to race at mad speeds with your heart trying to escape into your mouth, and win those goddamn CPU opponents after a 20 minute race by a matter of feet... phew! Got it for christmas last year, along with a steering wheel. Have you tried it with a steering wheel, GAMES? If you haven\'t, you\'re missing out :D (same applies to GT3)

[edit] BurnOut really seems like a game that people either love or hate. Or something in between... anyways, I just checked out what kind of scores it had received from GameFaqs, and it\'s been scored anything from 2/10 up to 10/10 (well, okay, nobody gave it a 6), depending on the reviewer. I\'d give it a healthy 9/10.

Damn I\'m gonna play GT3 and BurnOut for hours once I get home from work :D

[further edit] I\'ve come to the conclusion that most of the ones who don\'t like BurnOut are *****y little whimps who can\'t take a challenge :p

I remember that game. It was very hard and annoying sometimes, but also very motivating. The AI was pretty good and the other drivers were fighting back pretty hard. Remember the guy from Jamaika, Baptiste :rpissed: ? I don`t know how often I wanted to kill him :D

My sleeper hit was Loaded. The lighting was amazing for that time.

I thought Vagrant Story for PSX was one of my favorite "sleeper hits".  The game got kinda poor ratings do to the steep learning curve but I loved it.  The game actually had good, scripted writing and a comprehensive, awesome story.  I mean you hadda look at Ashley in a thong the whole game but every good game has some negetive factor.

I have not played Burnout but I own ICO

It is a great gaming experience; and that is putting that mildly.

"Little Big Adventure 1 and 2 were great adventure games for PC" - CS2x

Those were awesome games. Wasn\'t the developer a french company? Not too shaby... :D

I\'d say Ascendancy is one of my favorite sleeper hits. It\'s a Master of Orion 2 knock off in that you raise your species until you can build a space fleet and explore/conquer the galaxy. The game is VERY well polished, moderately difficult, and insanely fun to play. I still like MOO2 better.. expecially because of the Human and Elarian races.. but Ascendancy is a real gem in the rough. It still has a fairly large fanbase also.

I could give up my obligatory answer of Quest for Glory also, but QFG was a smash hit when it first came out.. garnishing several Game of the Year awards and establishing a franchise. Though it always took a back seat to Sierra\'s other quest series, it\'s fanbase is one of the largest and most loyal of any old games that I know. A fangame based off the QFG series is currently under works. Called Hero6, it currently boasts the largest staff of any independant fangame project on the net. Over 80 members and growing.

Poor ratings? I only saw it receive very high scores everyplace I looked. Didn\'t it even get a perfect 40 from Famitsu? Ouch. It was kinda low-profile around here and not much hyped, which made it even more enjoyable.

I loved Vagrant Story to bits, personally. I\'m on my 6th way through the game, I think, and I\'m practically immortal now, bwahhahahaa!

I want Burnout online!
