To wing or not to wing, that is the question
« on: March 04, 2002, 07:30:39 AM »
OK, like I said in a previous thread, I HATE WINGS!!  They look stupid.  It was brought up that they have function.  Well as it turns out they do, on the drag strip......

______________________
The reason the top front drive drag cars run wings is because of the
weight distribution of these cars.  Some of the tube-chassis front drive
drag cars balance out at 75% on the weight in the front of the car and
only 25% in the back.  The wing helps plan the back of the car on the
track when they get up to speed.  Now on the street/mild strip car the
wing is only a cosmetic item, they gain no advantage on the street.

Does that answer the question?  They still look stupid though.

I don\'t like big wings either. To make a car look sweet with a wing, it has to be the right sized wing.

well i already knew that about the wings

but some cards look cool with them and some dont - also some wings are just way to big - they dont need to be flashy but just look clean and classy

In a review a long time ago of the Lamborghini Diablo, the editors of the magazine said that the extremely large spoiler (or fin, whatever you call it) was good for one thing. During their road trip they had to pull over a couple times to get the map out and find were they were. The spoiler was used as a table to rest the map and a couple soft drinks on. Sounds like they serve a purpose to me!?;)

So those aren\'t the wings we\'re talking about because they have a purpose eh?

Wings arent bad if they are really low like say how they are on the Mustang. They are very low and they actually give it a pretty good appearance as comapred to a mustang with out it. Anything higher than that is just flat out gay and anyone seen driving with one should be shot because they think it makes them looook cool

This is my own post which i have pasted here for you.

Sorry bub....that wing is there for a reason. It\'s to prevent lift...yes, it\'s gotta be that high in order to be useful. Unlike those 4 inch high wings you see on Accords, those are purely cosmetics. The Impreza wings and Lancer wings were made to prevent lift at high speeds on long sweeps...though they don\'t create down force(except on the Impreza 22B).

Bah, airflow can be done with a little lip on your trunk. You don\'t need a gay ass wing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That\'s true with the Porsche and Audi TT because of its airfoil shape. The air follows the contour of the car\'s top all the way to the rear. So a small wing lip works. Before the wing lip was added to the Audi TT, they used to get into a catastrophic over steer at highway speeds when the driver would down shift and switch lanes. With the wind already lifting the rear end of the car, the reduction in speed made the weight transfer to the front caused the rear end to swing out(again, the lift from the air flow)

But unlike the Lancer and Impreza, the boxy shape of the top of the car caused the designers to make the rear wing higher.

And there you have it.

For christ sakes its not a god damn wing its a spoiler, and on a stock car or an indy car they serve the purpose of keeping the damn cars from flying in the stands, also on most expensive sports cars it serves the same purpose, of control.
