BTW, On the subject of "saving lives" when was the last time you heard of a pet cat maiming someone? I think their have been like 4 serious dog attacks in my area this year.

Cats are relatively small and can be easily kicked to the side. Dogs....on the other hand, are larger and therefore can cause a more serious threat. But to answer your question about cats attacking their owners.....here you go. Enjoy!

Extreme aggression toward owner - cat

Q: I\'ve read your web page on cat attacks and aggression, but I think my situation is a little different. Let me explain. I\'ve had my cat, Jessie, for 4 years now. The first 3 have been absolutely wonderful with her. She seemed happy. We played all the time and she slept with me every night. One day, she totally turned on me. She hissed and spit, lunged at my legs with her claws while letting out this horrible scream. She slashed me up pretty good. I thought it was a phase and talked quietly to her to try to calm her down. A couple of days passed, and she seemed ok, until it happened again. This has been going on for a year now. Now I can\'t walk freely in my apartment without her wanting to attack me. It seems her favorite place to go is under my bed. She\'s under there most of the time. But if I dare walk in my bedroom, she comes flying out with that scream and slashes at my legs. I love my cat. I don\'t want to get rid of her, and I don\'t favor the idea of having her declawed. (I personally think it\'s cruel.) Is there any advice or suggestions you can give me on this situation. Thank you for listening. Marybeth

A: MaryBeth- If you live in area in which a veterinary behaviorist practices (usually big metropolitan areas or near veterinary colleges) it would be worthwhile to consult with a behaviorist. Extreme aggression directed towards people is best treated by someone who can evaluate the possible physical causes and who is familiar with the possible psychological problems as well. Physical causes include problems such as chronic pain, ischemic damage in the brain and some neurologic defects. Psychological problems include extreme anxiety, redirected aggression, fear and several other potential problems. If a cause can be identified, either physical or psychological it is easier to predict whether or not treatment will be beneficial and obviously easier to choose the treatment plan most likely to work.

Good luck with this. I wish I could give you a more specific answer but this is another one of those problems that requires an examination and detailed history taking.

Cat Attacks (Ankle Biting)

Ankle biting and sudden attacks are most often associated with predatory aggression. Cats have a strong natural desire to hunt. Inside the house, there isn\'t much to satisfy this desire. Mice, grasshoppers and other attractive prey are scarce indoors, so they have to make do with what they have --- ankles and other moving body parts of their human companions.

In some cases it is possible to provide a more appropriate toy to satisfy the predatory urge. Toys that work are furry balls on a string, wand, or attached to a small fishing rod for efficient "casting" and interesting motion as it is reeled in. .A radio controlled car may work to exercise cats who are not afraid of them. Some people just tie a toy on a string to their belt to provide a better target then their ankles. This also provides a lot of exercise which is a good release of the pent up energy in many kittens.

Most cats will outgrow this behavior by the time they are a couple of years old and are much better if given alternatives objects to attack and sufficient exercise. . If your cat doesn\'t respond to this, it might be a good idea to consult with a certified animal behaviorist to make sure that predatory behavior is the problem.

Cats just don\'t like me, naturally. Every time I look one in its eyes it\'s asking for a fight. Or perhaps I was scarred for life this one day:.......

I was 7 years old and it was a hot summer day and I was just walking around in the backyard in nothing but some swimming shorts, eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I was just mindlessly walking around when all of a sudden the ugliest stray cat, with one eye, started walking towards me. I figured it would be hungry so I decided I may tear off a piece of my sandwich. But the foul beast started running at me! I was kind of in shock and just stood there, and the cat was jumping at my sandwich like a dog! For some odd reason it just started hissing at me for not giving it to him (which reminds me, I hate cats that hiss)and he threw a paw with his claws out at my ankle! This freaked me out and I started slowly stepping back when it made one last jump and slashed me across my chest, leaving 4 slashes about 4 inches long. Luckily I didn\'t catch rabies.

Hey Gman, when was the last time a pet cat killed someone in an attack. Of course, I\'m not downplaying ankle-biting and leg-scratching, they could be deadly.

Let\'s see...the cat\'s mouth is too tiny to get a good grip on an adult\'s flesh....teeth are too tiny...muscles aren\'t strong enough to take down an adult....it weighs less than 15 pounds.

Never.

And neither has a dog of equal size and weight.

So...therefore, small dogs and cats have NEVER been able to take down a full grown human.

Your argument is weak.

Make the cat slightly larger...say a lynx or bobcat, yes, they have killed adults before.

Yet still, a cat is too dumb to be of any use other than catching mice and small birds.

PS - cats have killed human babies. But just about anything can.

^^^When did the argument get into specifics? You guys say that cats(in general) are useless and that dogs(in general) are not.

I was just pointing out the fact that dogs kill a hell of a lot of people in addition to saving them.

BTW, Don\'t get me wrong. I have a dog and a cat. I just don\'t think cats are useless.

Yes, imagine a cat as large as a big dog.

Lynx, bobcats, leapards and cougars.....they have killed humans. The leapard and cougar are as large as Rottweilers, Mastiffs and St. Bernards.

Ah....specifics to keep the playing field fair. You know full well that a 150 pound dog can kill a human. So you say that an 8 pound Chihuahua is just as deadly?

you are saying that dogs are more dangerous because of their size.. true

but that is completely irrelevant to the overall fact that dogs are more dangerous. END. OF. STORY.

it just pisses me off when people think they are winning an arguement when we are arguing two different points.

the simple fact that you think cats are useless means that you have lost this arguement already, there is nothing to argue about, and anyone who considers them useless is an utter idiot who is ignoring obvious facts because they want to feel better about themselves and their dogs..
